I am new to the east coast and constantly hear that weekend travel is horrible by car. I was hoping to drive early on a Friday from Philadelphia to Newport. Is traffic really that bad- or is it mainly the popular beach areas that have bumper to bumper traffic?
traffic to newport on weekends
Getting to anywhere from 95 in bad on fridays in the summer. Traffic to newport once you are in RI should not be bad - connecticut, ny, ny will be the worse
traffic to newport on weekends
On weekends near NYC can be quite bad. To and from the city we often opt for going over the TappanZee Bridge instead- from the Garden State Parkway- taking the Merrit Parhway in Ct is definitly another option.
The way that xia told you is my recommendation too, the garden state to 287, over the tappan zee bridge to the merritt parkway then over to 95 around Milford, CT. You will still hit New haven traffic which is bad 24 hours a day but you will avoid real downton NYC traffic.
The traffic is always bad in the corridor especially in the summer. If you leave early, plan to be north of the city by 2pm to avoid the heaviest traffic. Otherwise I would probably wait and plan to hit the nyc area after 7 or 8.
Good luck!
We drive often back/forth from Providence to NYC and Prov to Virginia. The real issue is rush hour around NYC, which, for some reason, includes Sunday pm. The simple solution is: avoid it. Leaving PA early on a Friday should be just fine!
The NJ beach traffic has never affected our drive through that state. The NJ turnpike is a charm. (Beach goers use east-west arteries or the Garden State Pkwy. )
We always time our trip through NYC to avoid rush hour: plan to get through NYC by 3 or 4pm, especially if it%26#39;s a Friday or Sunday . There are sometimes back-ups north of the George Washington Bridge (NYC), but as mentioned: avoid rush hour.
There can be back-up north of NYC due to the CT toll booths, but our experience is maybe a 20 minute hassle. In CT, there are often construction delays, but these are minor. I have never had any back-up in RI on Rt 95.
Here%26#39;s a solid piece of advice: near NYC, tune in to 1010am for frequent traffic reports. We came through in the middle of the night two weeks ago and there was an hour delay on the George Washington Bridge (never knew why.) That offers you the chance to head for the Tappan Zee instead. Overall, this drive should not be a problem.
In RI, take Rt 138 from 95 to Newport. Avoid Rt 4 and Rt 1 in the early am as they are packed with beach goers.
Just met a couple that did the same drive and it took them just under 7 hours because of traffic in CT. Seems that CT is a traffic jam at any given hour, day, week, year. Not a bad drive overall as I have done it many times myself in 5 hours.

Used to live in RI %26amp; visit NJ family---then years later we moved to NJ %26amp; our child went to college in RI %26amp; boy the traffic has gotten terrible on 95, esp just east of NYC! We just don%26#39;t do it any more---use the Tappan Zee after going up 287. Rte 84 through CT can be pretty awful too, during rush hour around Danbury-Hartford.
From Philly, take 95 to rte 31 then 31/202 to Flemington, stay on 202 to 287 north. You can avoid the narrow scary heavily trafficked parts of 31 if you take exit 2 off 95 in Jersey, use Bear Tavern Rd (north on 579) all the way till it ends at 31. You will cross Jacob%26#39;s Creek in a steep ravine on Bear Tavern on an old narrow metal bridge; you%26#39;re not lost--but you are crossing it just where Washington%26#39;s army did on that Dec night.
The green building at the intersection of 546 %26amp; 579 in Hopewell Twp is the old Bear Tavern the road is named for, also where Wash. regrouped while the men came up from the river. Now state park hq.
