5month old infant + med size dog + 2 adults in Block Island

My husband and I area thinking of heading to Block Island for a week in August with our new baby and well-behaved dog.

Is this a good idea or a logistical nightmare? What makes more sense, a hotel or a vacation home rental? Any and all advice greatly appreciated. Also, we are thinking on the high end budget %26amp; amenity-wise. Thanks!

Check into high end rental homes. Sounds like you would enjoy having more space than just a hotel suite. The Block Island posts might help you find something.

It might be difficult to find a rental that will take a pet, but you can check. House rentals can be found on web sites such as cyberrentals.com, VRBO and vacation rentals.com

The town of Narragansett ( town that the area known as Galilee is located and where you get the Ferry) has lots of rentals and you could take a day trip to Block Island instead. You would then avoid the Ferry trip over and back to Block Island with your car, your baby and your dog.

Keep in mind that Block Island will be more expensive for a rental and for food, since everything goes over by boat. You might also feel more isolated if you get one or two rainy days. If you%26#39;re on the mainland it would be easier to jump in the car and go to Newport or Wickford , shopping etc.

enjoy the vacation!

For anyone reading this post this year - Narragansett is simply NOT BI! So the advice to ';avoid'; the ferry trip is ridiculous. (Would you stay in Cali because you wanted to ';avoid'; the airline travel of going to Hawaii?) The ferry ride is about 45 minutes of fresh salt air. Stay in a weekly rental, book early (WAY early if you plan on bringing your pet) and use the Island rental agencies; those websites have next to nothing.

Bring your bike, if you%26#39;re fit enough to ride a few miles a day. The first year we went there we did not bring a car. I loved it. We now travel with three kids and a grandmother, so the car is helpful. If you can, I would rent a house with enough room for your family and a babysitter - because you probably don%26#39;t want to miss out on the BI bars. You can always hire a local teenager - there are fliers up in the supermarket. Bring your food with you if you can - prices are three times of that on the mainland!

On second thought - ignore all that I wrote. Stay in Narragansett. There%26#39;s not enough room for more people to vacation on BI! You%26#39;re not missing anything. Really.

Wow, Mamajay seems a little angry and snobby about BI. I did not say Narragansett had the quiet, natural charm of BI. I simply thought it could be more challenging to get to the Island than to stay on the mainland and made an alternate suggestion. Availablity and cost of needed baby items would also be higher on the Island.

And it%26#39;s correct that the web sites I mentioned have more rental houses for Narragansett,Scarborough and Point Judith then those sites have for BI, but I was suggesting Narragansett as an alternative and where to find housing.

I personally would never recommend that someone put a 5 month old infant on the back of a bike or recommend a teenage stranger to watch their infant while they stroll the BI bars.

If you want natural island charm with some seclusion and don%26#39;t mind traveling a little more to get there, then BI is a great choice and I can appreciate the differences between the two places.

Good luck with you vacation.

a house near mansion beach( best part of the island) is what I would reccomend if you plan on going to the beach, if not , near rodmans hollow. VRBO.com is good. We had horrible luck with blockislandholidays.com. The house was very small and it had not been cleaned before we moved in. When we told the realtor their response was ';the owner has a history of being a slob';

Not exactly what we wanted to hear. I think you might be better off dealing with the owner directly on vrbo.com. It will be cheaper too since there won%26#39;t be fees attached.
