Flying into Providence for Fall Foliage 3 day weekend in October. Should we look for B%26amp;Bs in Providence, Newport, or further from the airport so we get to see some more rural areas? Will have rental car and don%26#39;t mind driving some. Would appreciate any B%26amp;B recommendations as well.
Providence/Newport for Leaf Peeping in October
The prettier foliage is in western Massachusetts, by the New York State border where you can see the shades of purple, deep red and gold of the Berkshire mountains sometimes behind and through low hanging clouds while you just sit spellbound in the 2 or three level glass walled reception area at the Hilton in Pittsfield. Do this at sunrise and sunset and different times of the day for a constantly changing view.
With that said, I think the best ';Fall'; experience you can have in Newport would be to take a sail on one of the charter sailboats. There is a schooner called the Madeleine that may still be in the water then as well as a ketch (I believe) called the Adirondeck ll (or it may be Adirondack). Both charge about $27 per person for a nearly 2 hour sail during the day and they charge more for a sunset sail. You%26#39;ll be taken around Narragansett Bay and Newport Harbor to Rose Island, Clingstone (The House on the Rocks); Jamestown and you%26#39;ll be able to see some of the mansions and tourist sites from the water. These boats will give you something of a ';Tall Ships'; experience as well even though they are both under 100 feet long if I recall correctly. I have sailed on both of them.
Sailing in the fall in Newport is nicer than in the summer. the visibility is better and everything seems so much more fresh, and vivid.
If you are intent on seeing foliage, you can also go on a helicoptor ride and the pilot will give you the bird%26#39;s eye view of Rhode Island.
Count on the helicoptor ride being a lot shorter and much more expensive.
Do either or both of these suggestions and you%26#39;ll remember your trip to Newport always!
For B%26amp;B recomendations, I%26#39;d read through the TripAdvisor reviews and information. the Medeleine and the Adirondack are in the phne book and you can check the Newport Airport and ask about Helicoptor rides.
Have a great trip!
Providence/Newport for Leaf Peeping in October
RI is very beautiful in the fall, but so isn%26#39;t all of New England. The coastal area peaks usually the last week or two in October. The most beautiful -rural areas in our area would have to be be the Little Compton, RI and Westport, MA areas, 45 minutes from Providence. Farms and ocean. And Bellevue Ave. in Newport where all the mansions are, when the leaves turn is gorgeous.
Thanks all for the wonderful suggestions! Will definitely plan on the sailing.
Please check out Yankee Magazine%26#39;s fall foliage info sites. (Maybe you can also look through last year%26#39;s ';fall foliage'; posts on Trip Adv to see the info flow.) Exactly when the best times are can change from year to year, depending on the summer weather, how hot, how much rain, etc. All of us here would agree it is not something easy to predict. If we have an early ';turn,'; you should go further north to get better views. The Berkshire Mtns, in western MA, are a three hour drive from Providence and worth it. See Sturbridge and Lenox- charming. Many savvy MA travellers do prefer to fly into Providence and avoid the Boston crush.
Spend a day in Newport, then consider a drive to the Berkshires.
