We really want to avoid having a car in Newport this summer, but we have never tried to get there using public transportation. Coming from NYC, from what I see, it would be a 3.5 hour train ride to providence and then a wait for the ferry to Newport? Is that the most direct route to Newport? I wish there were a NYC to Newport boat!!!!!!!!!!
What is the most direct way to Newport without a car?
Your most direct route would be the train to the Kingston Station. From there, there is a bus, car service, or cab that can take you to Newport. If you went to Providence, the Ferry Terminal is not near the train station and would be a pain to try and get to.

Wouldn%26#39;t a cab be very expensive from Kingston...why not take the bus from Providence to Newoport...that would be a lot cheaper and easier..not having a car in Newport can be a little problem as the trolley only goes to certain places...and if you want to venture out it%26#39;s a long walk
I have been to Newport several times and have no problem getting around by RIPTA. And while the bus is less expensive, it%26#39;s also a LONG ride from airport to Newport by bus.
I would do it...but it wouldn%26#39;t be my first choice. Cozy Cab charges $20 per person from the airport to Newport--not too bad.
I know...I know...it%26#39;s not the train station but I only fly in. HTH.
Thanks...that is great info...for some reason I thought it would be a LOT more....good info....Thanks for setting me straight......
I think flying here from NYC would cost less than the train anyway. I%26#39;m sure you can get a deal if you check Travelocity and don%26#39;t mention when you want to travel just say you are open between now and October and I bet you%26#39;ll see some good rates.
I%26#39;ve taken the ferry from Providence to Newport %26amp; back, %26amp; I loved it. From train station in Prov I would take taxi to ferry in Fox Point, if going for ferry. Certainly a more fun ride than the bus! I guess it would depend on the weather %26amp; on how much stuff you are lugging.
