Block Island with a Dog

We%26#39;re planning a trip to the coast next summer with our large poodle. Is Block Island a pet-friendly place? Are there several restaurants where you can eat outside with your dog? If the answer is no, we%26#39;d appreciate a recommendation for a plan ';B';.

Block Island with a Dog

Hi

How are you thinking of staying here...at an hotel, or renting a house? Generally the island is quite dog friendly....we allow them in our rental houses.....and we have dozens of local dogs, though where you can eat outside with one, I would have to look into.

Ala in all though, quite a good place for a dog owner.

Block Island with a Dog

Thanks kt12. We haven%26#39;t decided what kind of lodging we want yet. Still looking. I%26#39;m plodding through blockisland.com and following all the links. Can you hazard a guess at which area we should be focusing on? We will want to walk to the beach and to restaurants. We like to pretty much stumble out of our room and into an outdoor cafe for coffee and a paper each morning. That%26#39;s probably my husband%26#39;s primary requirement. That, and the dog.

Hi Igate

If you want to stumble out of your lodgings and straight into a cafe, or to the beach, then somewhere like the Surf Hotel, or the Gothic Inn, would probably be best...locationwise. You would, however, have to check their attitudes towards the dog...I haven%26#39;t ever had dealings with them on that subject. These two, alongside the gables, would put you right in town center, thus noise might be a problem.

Should you decide to rent a house, then you would be further from town, but stand an equal chance of finding somewhere that will take Fido.

Feel free to e-mail me direct if you wish....maybe I can help if yoyu need further info in those places.

Hey there - I am pretty sure that the Blue Dory allows dogs. At least they used to when I used to live out the island. There is a weight requirement if memory serves me right. Give them a call! :)

I just read somewhere that there are lots of bars on Block Island. Do any/many of them have outdoor seating if we bring our small dog along? We may have someone that could watch her in Narrangansett (if they don%26#39;t go along to BI with us), but just in case we take her along, I want to know what we can expect.

Thanks!

Ballards is definitely dog friendly - they also have a dog friendly beach. You can do lunch out at Yellow Kittens on the deck, or accross the street at Sharkeys. Most places are pretty flexible about having the dog if you sit outside. And almost everywhere has outside seating: The National, Aldo%26#39;s, The Oar, Captain Nicks, ...even the Spring House (very nice) you could prob swing lunch there with a dog. It shouldn%26#39;t be an issue at all.

I was just at Ballards to eat lunch on Memorial Weekend. No Dogs on the patio allowed. Though I have seen them in the past. We have a Golden retriever and they told me no per the Health Dept. Ballards has some issues they are trying to straighten out with the State so I think they changed the rule.

Any one know of any retals we can bring our (trained) dog? Thanks! Are all beaches dog friendly or just some?

Providence restaurants, hotels...6/22-6/25

Hi -

Looking to visit Providence for the first time - just husband and I. Where should we stay? I found a reasonably good deal for the Westin, so am considering that, but open to all options. Best romantic restaurants (we don%26#39;t want anything kid-friendly, we get enough of that with our 3 small ones!) Best bars? Also, how far is Newport? Do we need to rent a car? Any thoughts, opinions, etc...much appreciated!

Suzanne

Providence restaurants, hotels...6/22-6/25

Newport is a good half an hour by car. You could take the public transit speed ferry which in the summer runs pretty late, the schedule is at RIPTA. Many of the good restaurants are on Federal Hill.

Providence restaurants, hotels...6/22-6/25

Thanks, I%26#39;d like to avoid renting a car if at all possible.

Suzanne

Westin is well located and a good choice. Providence is very walkable. Besides Federal Hill, restaurants that you should consider for location and food are Capital Grill, Cafe Nouveau, Hemenways. The Providence visitor center is in the Convention Center next to the Westin. Stop in for ideas, maps, coupons, menus, etc.

Great suggestions from all those folks but check out some of the inns in Providence the Edgewood Manor especailly is extremely romantic and just gorgeous. We stayed there on several occasions and have had family stay there as well. Also you might need a vehicle to see other areas of Rhode Island like Bristol and Little Compton. Narragansett is pretty as well. Best restaurants are in Providence.

You can%26#39;t go wrong with the Westin. It%26#39;s a nice place with all the amenities and right in the middle of downtown Providence. You can walk from there to any number of downtown restaurants and bars. Check out rimonthly.com for dining listings. Also look to see if Waterfire is on when you visit -- not to be missed. Waterfire has its own website for more info. Newport is great, too, but I wouldn%26#39;t want to have to take the bus to there. You might want to talk to the people at the Westin to see if they offer any transportation to Newport or have some deal with a transportation company that you can take advantage of.

What a coincidence! Thanks for all the advice you gave me for my anniversary trip to Philly last week - hopefully I can return the favour in a small way. I haven%26#39;t lived in Providence long enough to know the best, but I know what I like so far!

Brunch:

Amy%26#39;s Place, 214 Wickenden St

Brickway on Wickenden, 234 Wickenden St

Dinner:

Siena, 238 Atwells Ave - Italian restaurant in the Federal Hill (Italian) area. I haven%26#39;t been but am waiting for an occasion worthy of eating there. We have asked lots of people for restaurant recommendations and almost everyone has mentioned this place.

I have also heard great reviews of Gracie%26#39;s, CAV and Pane e Vino (restaurants).

Cuban Revolution, 50 Aborn Street at Washington Street. Located in Downcity, this a small, friendly neighbourhood restaurant serving Cuban sandwiches and rice dishes for approx $6 - $12. My husband loves the %26#39;World%26#39;s Best Cuban Sandwich%26#39;. We eat here quite regularly because we live close by and the prices are good. http://www.thecubanrevolution.com/

Downcity http://www.shopdowncity.com/

The Downcity area has a pretty poor reputation but seems to be undergoing a revival of sorts. There are some good (expensive!) clothes and home stores on Westminster between Union an Eddy - there was a block party last night so that people could see all the changes. I haven%26#39;t visited Providence Open Market yet but intend to this weekend. It will be open every Saturday until late October, 11am - 5pm. http://www.providenceopenmarket.com

If you%26#39;re in town on a Thursday evening you can watch a movie outdoors at Cinema Paradiso, at the corner of Westminster and Union Streets. I think this is a new development - it%26#39;s very simple but cute. Casablanca was showing last night.

I%26#39;m looking forward to experiencing Waterfire this weekend: http://www.waterfire.org/

There%26#39;s a really good mall (as malls go!)

Thayer Street is nice to walk along. Lots of students around.

I haven%26#39;t come across a great bar yet, hopefully because I haven%26#39;t made much of an effort!

Hope that helps. I%26#39;d love to hear what you find and like after your trip.

I have done the ferry from Providence to Newport and loved it! Takes about an hour, but you see the coastline and it drops you off very close to a great area. Ask your hotel about getting to the Providence peer, though, it is not really in walking distance from the Westin.

For a very romantic restaurant go to Gracies (expensive but a beautiful space with just wonderful food). For funky go to Local 121 or Red Fez. Bravo is also good, as is Parkside and 3 Steeple.

If you go to Federal Hill (Italian section) I recommend eating outside at De Pasquale Square - lots of people and lots of fun.

Be sure a take a walk to Benefit Street in College Hill and also get a great view of the city from Prospect Park on Cogdon St.

Hi Suzanne......you were very helpful on my trip to Philly this past March. The Westin will be nice because it is attached to the mall. Hopefully you will be there during Waterfire. You are across the street from Roth%26#39;s Chris and The Capital Grille, but I don%26#39;t know that you would be interested in chain restaurants. I agree with Sienna on Federal Hill. A good but VERY expensive steakhouse on the Hill is Prime. And next to Prime is the Oyster Bar. A favorite for lunch is Angelo%26#39;s (also on the Hill). Very casual restaurant with good basic Italian. . If you take a walk along Thayer St ( college area) stop at Andrea%26#39;s for Greek. I really think a car would be best, but I suppose you can do without one. They have troliies and you are very close to Kennedy Plaza where the city buses all leave from. Try to stay away from there at night. If you like to slum it, there is a truck (kiner) that pulls in across from Kennedy Plaza at about 6 pm. It is on Fulton St on the side of City Hall. You can get soime good hot dogs and burgers.

Also, check to see if anything is playing at the Providence Performing Arts Center when you are there. It is a beautiful place.

You could take a bus to Foxwoods for the day if you like to gamble.

I will give this more thought and get back to you when I am not so tired!!

June 23rd is waterfire!

Irish Festival Labor Day

Is it necessary to purchase tickets for the Newport Irish Festival in advance? We are traveling for the festival from Florida and would be really disappointed if there were no tickets available when we get there. Thanks

Irish Festival Labor Day

No, you do not need to buy tickets ahead of time. You can buy them at the door. It does not ';sell out';.

You might get a little bit of a discount if you buy them before, but don%26#39;t worry about not getting in.

Irish Festival Labor Day

Thanks for your response. We would be truly disappointed if we got there only to be without tickets! I did go to the advanced ticket site but couln%26#39;t tell if the tickets to purchase were for one day or all three.

King Park to play and throw rocks in the harbor. I bring my 2 year old there all the time and he loves it. There is a good park there also and covered picnic tables. Go to Sig%26#39;s for sandwiches.

Brenton Park to throw rocks in the ocean and watch kite flying or fly one of your own. Bring some crackers to feed the seagulls.

Check the calendar of events at www.GoNewport.com because there may be some family activity taking place.

There are also train rides next to the visitors center.

The best beach for children is Gooseberry as there are no waves and it is a great family beach.

Go to Aquidneck Lobster Company to get up and close to lobsters.

Trail walks at Norman Bird Sanctuary.

    Outdoors bars/places to eat

    Hello.......

My boyfriend and I are going to Newport this weekend and are looking for fun/nice outdoors bars or places to eat. Any place with a view of the water would be great but it isn%26#39;t necessary. Folk Festival

We are a newly married couple in their mid 30%26#39;s planning a weekend at the Folk Festival at Newport. Can anyone recommend a good hotel/B%26amp;B that is close to nightlife and downtown. Thanks!!

Which 5 mansions to see and Cliff Walk question

We are coming to Newport for two nights and almost 3 days in early May (arriving around noon on a Friday and departing early afternoon on a Sunday). We have never been to Newport before. We%26#39;d like to do the Cliff Walk and buy a combo ticket that lets you into five of the Preservation Society mansions which include The Breakers, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Marble House, Rosecliff, Green Animals Topiary Gardens, Kingscote, Chepstow, or Issac Bell House. Which ones should we choose?

Also, is it possible to see all 5 in one day? Is the ticket only valid for 1 day?

Finally, I read that the Cliff Walk is 3.5 miles. That is one way, right? So, to walk it and return would be 7 miles? That sounds like it could take the rest of our Friday if we decided to do it then. Would we be able to see 5 mansions on Saturday and 1/2 Sunday?

Which 5 mansions to see and Cliff Walk question

Regarding the Cliff Walk, it%26#39;s as long as you want to make it....the whole thing is around 3.5 miles ';one way'; but the last portion is pretty rugged, ie. climbing on rocks, avoiding some water puddles, etc....there are many entrance/exit points along the way, you can also catch a trolley at the end if you decided to do the whole thing one way....check out: www.cliffwalk.com for more information. There is also a link to the ';10 Mile Drive'; if you%26#39;ll have a car.

Not sure if your tickets would be good for multiple days, if they are, I would definitely split it up....unless you%26#39;re a real ';mansion buff'; I%26#39;d say 3 would be the limit for me in a day....There%26#39;s so much else to see in Newport.....especially if the weather is nice.

The Breakers is a must, it%26#39;s a guided tour....most of the others are at your own pace...you get an i-pod type thing that gives you the tour, and you can click on additional numbers in each room to make the tour as involved as you want. I like the Elms and Marble House as well....

    Also, Doris Duke%26#39;s mansion Rough Point is open for tours, but you need to make reservations, and is not part of the ';mansion group';

Which 5 mansions to see and Cliff Walk question

thanks very much (again!) this is very helpful. I will call the mansion people to see if we can split the 5 mansions and see them over 2 days. What other activities would you recommend in Newport in addition to the mansions and the Cliff Walk?

Early May the weather should be warming up, so the possibility of a harbor sail will be available....although there won%26#39;t be nearly as many ';luxury yachts'; and other boats to look at quite yet.

The Atwater Villa is right next to the Newport Art Museum and the Redwood Library (lots of old historic documents and books) if that interests you. Also the little known National Museum of American Illustration is down the street on Bellevue.

Tennis Hall of Fame is located on Bellevue as well....if you%26#39;re not that into tennis, you can still poke your head into the entrance that has a grass court, and a few statues on display....

Tons of little shops and restaurants throughout the Thames St. and Wharf areas.

A stop at the Visitors Center, can give you a better idea of what%26#39;s going on that particular weekend.

If you have a car, the 10 mile drive is nice....you%26#39;ll pass some of the ';new'; mansions out on Ocean Drive....there are also a couple of wineries that offer tours/tastings if that interests you.

Again, lots of cool restaurants/bars to grab a bite or a drink.

Fort Adams offers tours at times (not sure if they%26#39;re open in May..but probably)

If sailing interests you there is the Museum of Yachting right next to Fort Adams, and the International Yacht Restoration School is on Thames Street....you can poke your head into the IYRS to see students restoring old wooden boats...

Newport Grand has slot machines, if you want to try your luck at those.

Touro Synagogue (The oldest Synagogue in the country) has tours.

There%26#39;s self guided walking tour around part of the city with plaques along the way that tell you about some of the architecture and sites that you see along the way.

As you can see, there%26#39;s pretty much something for everyone....let me know if there%26#39;s anything in particular that you guys like....

    this is very helpful.

We are not into sailing or winery tours. Tennis is fine, but because we only have a couple of days, we won%26#39;t do the hall of fame. We will have a car, so we may try toe 10-mile drive you mentioned.

We are in our late 20s, pretty outdoorsy (hiking), like good food that is not too fancy/overpriced. Any inside knowledge as far as restaurants go would be appreciated. We would prefer to go to a simple local ';gem'; instead of some super-fancy tourist trap...

For hiking, you could check out the Norman Bird Sanctuary....they have all sorts of nature trails....it%26#39;s out by ';2nd Beach'; in Middletown...about a 5-7 minute drive from your Inn.

    http://www.normanbirdsanctuary.org/home.shtml

All sorts fo dining options....our local favorites:

    5th Element: http://www.5eri.com/

Brick Alley Pub: www.brickalley.com (Some will argue that because it can get crowded it%26#39;s a %26#39;tourist trap%26#39;...it%26#39;s not....) good food that locals and tourist all like.....bar scene is a little bit like Cheers with the regulars and tourists mixed in....bartenders are really friendly.

    Salvation Cafe: www.salvationcafe.com

    Eclectic food on Broadway

    The Mooring: www.mooringrestaurant.com/

Sefood and Nice Views of the Harbor

    Seafood...no Credit Cards

Casual Fine Dining...i.e...you don%26#39;t have to get dressed up...

    The Smoke House: www.smokehousecafe.com

Outside Bar / BBQ place...good people watching. Not sure if it will be open yet though. Usually Mid-May.

Mudville Pub: Located next to the Baseball Stadium across from the Visitors Center....Pub Food

    Buskers: www.buskerspub.com

Authentic Irish Pub....owned by real Irish Guys

    180: Located on Broadway....funky lounge/bistro type place

Rhumbline: Hidden in the Point Section...ask for directions...casual fine dining.

thanks so much! I have saved all your responses to my ';Newport'; trip folder!

The ticket is not valid for only one day. I think you have at least a year, if not longer to see the attractions listed. Also, it%26#39;s possible to see three mansions in a day but please don%26#39;t rush through. Take you time to walk the grounds and imagine another time in history. Walking around outside can be just as enjoyable as inside, especially for some mansions. So if you do three in a day, start early and schedule yor visits, allowing yourself enough time to enjoy every part of your tour. You live close enough to be able to return again if you like Newport, which I%26#39;m sure you will. Don%26#39;t rush it. Each of these mansions has a different story. Allow yourselves the opportunity to savor the history of each one. It will give you an excuse, (not that you%26#39;ll need one), to return again and see the others.

I think we may just go to two or three -- the Breakers, the Elms, and Marble House. I have not decided whether to buy a ticket for all 5 (seems like a good deal for $31) and just use it later, like you mentioned...

I would highly recommend Astor%26#39;s Beechwood as one of your mansion tours, it is a lot of fun. It is not as huge as the others, but has actors and actresses that role play the Astor%26#39;s family and their servants, they actually do the tour, they%26#39;re very talented. The Breaker%26#39;s is a must because it%26#39;s the most elaborate. Those would be my 2 definites, the 3rd would probably be the Isaac Bell house or Kingscote, because they are different from the other 2 in architecture. Just MHO.

Thanks very much for the tip!

    Mysterious Farm

I%26#39;ve heard of a little-known farm that is somewhere near ';downtown'; Newport called Happy Valley. Supposedly there are small hobbit-type dwellings there too. Can anyone give me more details? I go to Newport a couple times a year and would love to explore this place. Thanks!

    Mysterious Farm

You%26#39;re probably thinking of the Surprise Valley Farm...or the Swiss Village as it%26#39;s known. It was built in the 1900%26#39;s and is now a farm for protecting endanged and rare animals (they do gene and dna research). They were never really open to the public, but opened for the first time in May (They say it will be an annual thing) for one day to allow visitors to see the village and animals.

    www.svffoundation.org/swissvillage/index.html

You%26#39;ll probably have to wait until next May....

Hmm . . . I do know about Swiss Valley but from what friends have told me, this is not the mysterious farm. Maybe my friends are confused! Thank you for your reply.

    Newport lodging

Where is a good place to stay for less than $150.00 per night in Newport? We would stay at either B%26amp;B or hotel type. We are senior citizens and require only a clean room with private bath down by the Wharf. We need a parking place free.

It all depends on the time of year. In season almost all places have 2 night minimums. The reservation companies will be able to assist you with location and pricing. The above website also has a great calendar of events that you should visit concerning the time you are visiting.

This would be July 16 (Monday) and July17 (Tuesday) - for 2 nights. We want to see the mansions and do Cliff Walk, etc. What lodgings are reasonable downtown?

    saundrobe

    Thanks!

    saundrobe

You might want to try America%26#39;s Cup Inn- right downtown and overlooked, though not as modern as some of the other hotels...don%26#39;t know about parking...probably tough to find in that range in July in Npt. Las Palmas Inn or Jailhouse Inn maybe??

Thanks. I think we decided to stay in Middleport. It is much cheaper - parking is fine and rates are reasonable.

    saundrobe

You might want to call the Newport Gateway center/ Newport Chamber of Commerce to find out about deals. Also I was recently called by Wyndham Resorts which has all sorts of package deals including vouchers to see a mansion or a $50 gfift certificate to a restaurant and the accomodations offered were for a family of four. they were at various places including the Best Western Mainstay in Middletown across from Jai alai and they were for two nights and just $150! The catch was that you had to sit through a timeshare presentation (but you aren%26#39;t obligated to buy).

  • best place to get picnic supplies

I will be in Newport next week and am looking for a good place to buy supplies for a beach picnic. Any recommendations?

best place to get picnic supplies

There is a WalMart and JobLot on the island just outside of downtown Newport. There is also a BJ%26#39;s Club if you are a member.

Sig%26#39;s Deli has great sandwiches and a fantastic mac%26amp;cheese and always has a line on beach days.

best place to get picnic supplies

Did you mean food supplies? Ditto on Sig%26#39;s Deli..otherwise I hear the Ace%26#39;s Hardware store at First beach has all you might need as far as chairs and pails and stuff.

My first choice would be Bliss (Gourmet) Cafe and Market (upscale)which is located on Broadway in Newport. It is just north of the Newport Hospital on the corner of Brodway and Bliss across Bliss from the Newport Prescription Center. They have truly gourmet takeout. Scrumptious baked and savory foods as well as your usual sandwiches. You can also get grocery items from the market section.

If you stop here, you can take a short-cut to the beaches by taking Bliss Rd and then take a right on Eustis and take it all the way to the end. Then take a left on Memorial Blvd and you%26#39;ll be at EAston%26#39;s BEach or First Beach in Newport. You can continue on to 2nd and 3rd beaches in Middletown. Just follow the road along the water.

If you want cheap wraps there is a D%26#39;Angelo%26#39;s on West Main Road in Middletown that you%26#39;ll pass before you even enter Newport, if you want more interesting wraps and a little more expensive go to Pic-a-pockets on Thames St in Newport but you%26#39;ll have to battle for a parking space since it is downtown.

Stay in Newport - Airport question

My wife and I are planning a visit to RI next month. We have never been and are looking forward to a get away just for us (without kids). I am a little concerned about our flight reservations because I could not get the times I wanted that would give us the most time to enjoy our visit and not have to rush but we will at least have 2 full days. We arrive Monday (6/11) at 9pm and depart Thursday (6/14) at 7:30am. I wish we were arriving earlier and leaving later but the ticket prices were about 3 times the cost. Anyway, I guess my real question is how hard would it be to return a rental car make a 7:30am flight if you are staying at a B%26amp;B in Newport. I think we want to spend the majority of our time in Newport but we could move to a hotel closer to the airport if we need to Wednesday night. Thanks.

Stay in Newport - Airport question

Well, if your rental is at the airport or often they are across from the airport it should not take too long. For a domestic flight at 7:30 am I would be there an hour early even if I checked baggage. If it was later in the day I would make sure this to be the case since the line can be longer. But this is only what I would do. Enjoy your stay.

Stay in Newport - Airport question

If your question is, %26#39;should you stay closer to the airport your last night?%26#39; I would say no....I regularly fly out of PVD even earlier than 7:30. If your rental car is in the airport garage (Hertz, Budget, or Avis) I would leave a little before 6:00 and you should be all set.

Maybe 5:30 if your rental involves a shuttle bus (Enterprise, Payless, Alamo, Dollar, Thrifty)...

Figure 45 minute drive from Newport to TF Green.

isn%26#39;t it possible to return the car to the rental office and drop the keys in the night box? I would call and find out.

Thanks for the responses. I%26#39;ll leave early enough to turn in the car and catch the plane. The wife has already told me she didn%26#39;t want to move to a different hotel just to be closer to the airport. Now for figuring out where to stay. Sounds like B%26amp;B is the way to go and there are a lot to choose from.

I would check out the ....Edgewood Manor or The Charles Newhall House........ four miles from the airport if you wanted to stay at a great inn and be close enough to catch a 730 am flight the next morning. You have to be at the airport at least 1 hr prior to departure so you need to factor this in to your plans. Good luck!!

that early in the morning will be an easy trip to the airport.

www.GoNewport.com for places to stay and a great calendar of events.

2 days is a nice time to spend.

See a mansion or two (Breakers and Astros Beechwood), walk on the Cliff Walk, drive 10 mile ocean drive and stop at Castle Hill for the view, visit the Tennis Hall of Fame, get out on the harbor and eat your way through the city!

Cozy Cab has regular airport shuttle service for about $20 per person just about hourly from the major hotels. All you%26#39;d need to do is call them and ask about the airport shuttles and tell them where you want to pick it up. You could turn in the rental care the night before and either walk or take a cab to one of the shuttle pick-up locations.

I%26#39;m adding to my previous post. I just wanted to clarify that the airport shuttle service I am talking about with Cozy Cab is from Newport to the airport.

    B&B with a pool??

MH and I are interested in a getaway to Newport this July.

Are there any B%26amp;B%26#39;s with pools?

    Are the beaches nice?

    B%26amp;B with a pool??

    Reed Rose Cottage, excellent!!!!!!!!!!

    B%26amp;B with a pool??

I know you might think this is off the wall, but here%26#39;s an alternate suggestion. Try staying in Westerly, RI -- we have wonderful beaches and for a B%26amp;B you might try The Villa. Only a couple of miles from the beach, has some lovely rooms, a pool, and a spa and pretty gardens. Right next door to a public golf course, too. You can drive to Newport (I do it every day) -- about 40 minutes.

To look at B%26amp;Bs in the Newport area though, try this web site: bbonline.com

The Sanford Covell Villa is wonderful and has a pool I just don%26#39;t know the status of it at the moment. 401.847.0206

It is on Washington Street and overlooks the Newport Bridge and the harbor and is an easy walk to downtown.

Second beach is my choice on the island.

    Also visit www.GoNewport.com

I would stay in Newport because there is a lot more to do but if you want to take a day trip to even nicer beaches then you%26#39;ll find in Newport (although Second beach or Sachuest is nice by most standards (which is technically in Middletown), you can venture over the Newport and Jamestown bridges you%26#39;ll find nicer beaches as you head towards Westerly-- first in Narragansett; then in Charestown before you hit Westerly.

    The Anchor House

Has anyone seen the Anchor House recently. The reviews are all from 2003 and not so good. However, the chamber of commerce website says it was recently remodeled. Also, there seems to be some loose affiliation with the 1661or Manisses Hotel. My friends parents live on block island and recommended the Anchor House, as they know the owner. Anyone have a recent experience there?

    The Anchor House

I visited about a year ago, and was very disappointed. There was no view, the car noise was loud, and my own bedroom had more charm. Would not recommend, even if the rooms were nicer.

    waterfire

Going to be in Providence the weekend of Jun 23 and wondered about suggestions of a hotel within a few blocks of the Waterfire event AND suggestions mid price dining that Saturday night in the area. I%26#39;m sure restaurants will be packed and want to plan ahead and make reservations.

We will have a car but don%26#39;t want to drive that evening.

    waterfire

Hotels within walking distance include the Biltmore, Marriott, Hotel Providence, Renassiance Providence Hotel, or Dolce Villa (farther away than the others, maybe a mile from Waterfire). Keep in mind all will be very expensive for a Waterfire night and sell out very quickly. You could always get a hotel in Pawtucket or Seekonk and commute.

As for restaurants mid priced (avg. entree %26lt; $20) try Bravo, 3 Steeple, Parkside, Local 121, or Cuban Revolution, Red Fez (both a step down in price and quality) or Mills Tavern, Cafe Nuovo, Gracies (all a step up in price and quality, especially Gracies).

Enjoy Watefire, it is really a wonderfully unique event!

    waterfire

There%26#39;s also the Hilton and the Westin which are both in walking distance as well.

    Good Luck and Enjoy!

Do you know of any restaurants in the area of Waterfire that are kid friendly? We%26#39;ll have our 12 month old twins in tow. :)

My guess is that Union Station or Ri RA would be the best bets if you have a child in tow. Both are chain%26#39;s, though.

There%26#39;s also the Providence Place Mall nearby that has a couple of chain restaurants in it. It has the Cheesecake Factory, Napa Valley Grill and Fire %26amp; Ice.

    Thanks for the info everyone!

Inn at Newport Beach -- Have you stayed here recently?

Will be attending a wedding in early Nov. and the bridal couple have suggested the Inn at Newport Beach... the Trip Advisor reviews that I saw were a couple of years old and very mixed....has anyone out there stayed at this hotel in the last 6 months / to a year? The rooms on their web site look rather nice but it is their web site. If not this place, any suggestions? We don%26#39;t know the Newport area very well....thanks for your help..........

Inn at Newport Beach -- Have you stayed here recently?

I know that they were closed for much of this past winter for renovations, but have not heard of anything yet.

It%26#39;s a great location during the summer, but in November, can be chilly (right across from the beach) and a little bit away from the activity of Downtown, but that time of year parking downtown will not be a problem (and free)

Is the wedding at the Atlantic Beach Club? If so, that is definitely the closest hotel (right across the street!) Otherwise, that time of year you should be able to find inexpensive accomodations downtiown....

Inn at Newport Beach -- Have you stayed here recently?

Hi..........thanks for your input......the wedding will be at Rose Cliff...so the hotel does seems a little far; however, based on what I%26#39;ve read, Newport is rather small? I think I%26#39;ll check on a couple of places ';downtown'; as well per your suggestion.........

You are right in that the reviews are mixed. I haven%26#39;t seen or hear about any improvements or renovations to the place in recent years. It is right between the two beachs, but Npt is small and anywhere you be, even in Middletown will be convenient with a car. Rosecliff on the other hand- is gorgeous. You could probably find a better place and this site offers many suggestions.

If your wedding is at Rosecliff, the Hotel Viking would be very convenient, it%26#39;s right at the start of Bellevue, so maybe a mile to most to Rosecliff...also many B%26amp;B%26#39;s and Inns around town as well.

Check out www.gonewport.com for a list of accomodations and links to their websites.

Yes Newport is small, and if you get a nice weekend, very walkable. Even if the weather is bad, the parking around town won%26#39;t be a problem that time of year.

I live in Newport and that place has been through several changes of management and subsequent redecorations/ renovations. Right now I believe it is a Comfort Inn so it must be fairly comfortable. It is right across the street from the main public beach in Newport and a a good restaurant called the Atlantic BEAch club (that has an excellent lobster salad plate). If you want to get up and go swimming in the ocean first thing in the AM and last thing at night, it may be one of the only places that would easily facilitate that.

It is also next to at least another half dozen restaurants including a sports bar, a popular clam shack called Flo%26#39;s that is a Rhode Island institution (however I have never had food there that was anything special)I think people just like the skanky atmosphere. There is a pizza place or two and a couple bars/restaurants. You can walk along the beach and up the hill partway to the Cliff Walk and had dinner or lunch in the most expensive restaurant in Newport, if not in the state, inside The Chanler Inn, called the Spiced Pear and enjoy the views and the food that is edible art.

Thanks for your great input.....I%26#39;ll check out the Viking and a couple of the b%26amp;b%26#39;s......I%26#39;m new to the ';trip advisor forums'; and boy this is really helpful! Ciao for now..................

  • Bird's eye view helicopter tours

Hello! My family and I are going to Newport this month and are interested in the mansion tour offered by this company. I was wondering if anyone has tried it and if so, how was their experience?

    Thank you!

    Bird's eye view helicopter tours

I think taking a helicoptor tour is a GREAT idea. Another great way to see Newport is from the water and to do that I would go out on The Adirondack or the

Madeline or one of the charter schooners. After all, Newport was where the first America%26#39;s Cup race was sailed and won and where they were held for many years. The Newport waterfront is breathtaking from a sailboat as it is from a helicoptor. In a sailboat you can savor it more.

    Bird's eye view helicopter tours

    Thanks for your input!

We%26#39;re planning on sailing on the Madeline and are looking foward to seeing Newport by land, sea and air.

    Rehersal Dinner in Newport, RI

I will be hosting a rehersal dinner for my son%26#39;s wedding in early November in Newport. I%26#39;m looking for a place that can accommodate approx. 50 people and where I won%26#39;t have to ';break the bank'; to pay for it. Since the wedding will be a very formal event the next day, I would prefer to have a more ';casual'; affair. Good food is important. Thanks for your advice....

    Rehersal Dinner in Newport, RI

Not sure how big your ';bank'; is to break, but the Brick Alley has a nice function room up stairs if there are over 50 people.....or downstairs for under 50.

It%26#39;s a local and tourist favorite...casual, and good food.

    www.brickalley.com

    Some other ideas,

    Sardellas for Italian:

    GasLamp, 2nd floor 401.845.9300

Sardella%26#39;s, 2nd floor or other private rooms available 401.849.6312

    check out www.GoNewport.com %26amp; www.YourNewportWedding.com

Thanks so much for your suggestions....I%26#39;ll get busy on the web and check them out..........

Sala%26#39;s Restaurant is a reasonably priced family style Newport institution. The food is hardly gourmet but they have good basic seafood and Italian. You can get good steamers there. Portobello%26#39;s is an Itallian Deli with a really nice atmosphere and a huge selection. They have a ';dinner'; there on the weekends with white table cloths. You might give them a call to see if they could set aside 1/3 or 1/2 of the tables for you. Some of the BYOB places might be an option like Puerini%26#39;s. You could have Bliss Cafe cater the dinner. You could pick it up there and take it somehwere or maybe have it there. They have a great cafe with nice atmosphere that they usually close at 7PM but you might be able to reserve the whole place for your dinner. They have seating both inside and out. It is usually a takeout gourmet food place with a section that is a mostly organic market.

There are so many places in Newport but most of them especially in the summer are overpriced and over-rated and the food is only so-so. They know the tourists will come whether they do a good job or not. I think at any of these places you%26#39;ll get decent food without breaking the bank. I would speak to the owners of Portobello%26#39;s and Bliss and the manager of Puerini%26#39;s and tell them what you are thinking of and see what they come up with. With Bliss you might luck out and get upscale gourmet at very reasonable prices. Sometimes their food is priced well and sometimes not as well - but is is ALWAYS good (better than the others I think, but the others have a better venue for dining).

If you were looking to spend a little more, maybe $20 - $30 per person, I%26#39;d say the Atlantic Beach Club in Middletown at the Newport line right on First BEach. Their prices are reasonable and food is pretty consistent with a big menu, a great lobster salad plate (with lots of other selections priced lower) and a nice more formal atmosphere with linen table cloths.

I hope this helps. It is hard to know what to suggest without knowing what you want to spend.

thanks so much for your very thoughtful input.....i will definetly call those places you mentioned.....re price I was thinking in the $20 / $25 range for dinner ....and add%26#39;l cost for beverages....so, if I could find a BYOB place that would really be great! That tends to keep the cost down a bit.....ciao for now.............

Oh, well if that is the price range, I know Salas and I think Atlantic Beach club certainly have entrees for in the $9 to $12 range with, in the case of the Atlantic Beach club, a few in the $20 range. Perhaps if you called them and told them how many you were, they could provide a prix fix menu of a few entrees and have you all sit in one section of the dining room which is HUGE. That way you could be sure some of the guests would not go too wild ordering the most expensive items and you%26#39;d be well within your budget and would save you the time and hassle of planning everything separately to try to keep costs down.

I might just check www.superpages.com and do a search in Newport, RI for restaurants, catering, Bed and Breakfasts, Inns and just start calling and asking questions. Maybe you%26#39;d luck out and get something at one of the restaurants that have private rooms, but they are mostly in the $$$+ price range.

Some of the smaller Inns and larger B%26amp;B%26#39;s promote their facility for business meetings and functions. They could help you have something nice catered and only charge a nominal fee for the room that you%26#39;d use. Yankee Peddlar Inn on the Harbor in right across from where Christy%26#39;s used to be on the waterfront and they might be someone to contact about that. They have other Inns as well. This options requires more planning though.

    Good luck.

IMO the food at the Atlantic Beach Club is pretty mediocre; if you are accustomed to eating finer food. Though the view and location are great.

I agree the food isn%26#39;t outstanding but I didn%26#39;t say it was. (It will never be a Black Pearl or The Place or White Horse Tavern) but you aren%26#39;t paying those prices and when you consider the surroundings and the price of the food, its very reasonable. It is certainly better than the Brick Alley Pub (lol). It is at least on a par with Zelda%26#39;s, Yesterday%26#39;s and Sardellas and the atmoshpere is nicer than those three and up until at least the beginning of last year (which was the last time I think it was that I had it),The ATlantic Beach club had to hae had the best lobster salad plate in Newport.

    help with short trip

Would you recommend Providence for a 2-3 day get-a-way? Or another New England city? (We%26#39;ve already ';worn out'; Boston)

What airport would we fly into?

Transportation? Would we have to rent a car to get from airport to hotel? I%26#39;m guessing once in Providence, we can walk everywhere?

    Thanks!

    help with short trip

Providence is a great 2-3 day trip. From T.F. Green (PVD)airport, you can take public bus (RIPTA) or a shuttle to downtown Providence . Bus is $1.50. Shuttle is $11.00 plus $1.00/bag. In Prov., you can walk most places, but again you can use public transport to get anywhere else. Full day use of bus trasport is $6.00.

    Thank you so much!

    Mansfield House

We are renting the Mansfield House on Old Towne Rd. in August. They are refurbishing the interior, but no pictures are available. Has anyone ever stayed there?

    Mansfield House

If you are renting through one of the on island agencies (ie; Ballard Hall, Sullivans, BI Realty, etc) they will probably have some pictures they can send to you. Even if they are of the ';old'; interior, it should give you an idea. Check with the realtor to see if they can provide any. Might be your best bet.

    Transportation

leaving from long island, what is the fastest and cheapest way to get to block island??

    Transportation

I would assume the Hi-speed ferry out of Montauk, but I%26#39;ve never used it.

    Oki's Japanese Steakhouse

Oki%26#39;s is not what it once was. It is dirty and the service is bad. We made 8pm reservations and waited 45 minutes to be seated. I first dined at Oki%26#39;s 15 years ago and it was a great experience. Now, the chefs cannot perform their tricks well anymore, the bathrooms are dirty with overflowing wastebaskets, water all over the sink and they SMELL. Makes me wonder how clean the kitchen really is. The food is still good, but at prices 5 star restaurants charge, $25 dollars a plate, they should hire a cleaning crew. They also try to trick you into buying fried rice when you place your order. Try Shogun in Warwick, it is what Oki%26#39;s once was in it%26#39;s heyday.

    Oki's Japanese Steakhouse

Yeah I noticed the same thing you mentioned.. I for one will never go there again. But I will take ya up on Shogun in Warwick..

    How%26#39;s the pricing there?

    Oki's Japanese Steakhouse

    It%26#39;s slightly less in price.

  • Son at Camp.. Help!

OK.. my son is attending a camp in Portmouth, RI and I%26#39;ll be needing a hotel around there that is reasonable. It%26#39;s just me and so mostly it%26#39;s a place to rest my head, but it has to be clean and safe, especially since I%26#39;ll be traveling by myself.

Was wondering what the deal was with Newport Spa and Whirlpool (odd name for a hotel). Seems there are lots of mixed reviews.

There%26#39;s also the Travelodge. Anything else that%26#39;s in the 80-120 range?

    Son at Camp.. Help!

There is an econolodge also near there, a howard johnsons, and a days inn that you might check out. There is also a Motel 6 next to the Walmart and adult bookstore, but it really isn%26#39;t as bad as it sounds....a lot of wedding groups use that as a hotel and I%26#39;ve stayed there years ago and it%26#39;s fine.

The Newport Spa used to be a Ramada Inn that the Navy folk used to use alot because of it%26#39;s proximity to the base....and I know a lot of wedding groups use it, but can%26#39;t give you a first hand account. We had some people stay at the econolodge for our wedding and they had no complaints.

Not sure when you%26#39;re coming (weekday, weekends, etc) so that may also effect your prices.

    Son at Camp.. Help!

I will be there July 8-July 10 (Sun-Tues). I think what%26#39;s so difficult is that I flank the 4th of July week.

Are you going to be spending time in Portsmouth as well, or are you going to be heading to Newport to explore....? I just saw that the Best Western Mainstay for $109. It%26#39;s in Newport, right across form Newport Grand (The old Jai Alai Fronton now a slot machine casino) for $109. It was renovated about 2 years ago (addition put on) and is always popular because it%26#39;s not too far from downtown. (Not walking distance really, but still close)

Otherwise, I think you%26#39;re probably OK with your dates....the mad crush of 4th of July will be over, and you%26#39;re looking at Sun - Tues....while still the high season, the slow days of High Season.

I stay at the travelodge every time i go to newport...it is quiet and clean and the staff is friendly. It%26#39;s also out of the pricey tourist district. I don%26#39;t rent a car and have no problem getting around. I would NOT stay at the Econolodge...it just looks seedy to me.

of course, i have more to say...the travelodge is within walking distance of a market, strip mall (MIchael%26#39;s, Border%26#39;s or B%26amp;N-i forget which) and plenty of restaurants.

Mod, i travel alone every trip and have never felt uneasy since my first stay...I go to Middletown about 4 times a year. All seasons...as I said, the travelodge is quiet (except when they had all those beefy rugby playing boys there in April and I didn%26#39;t mind that...they were young but very cute. :) The room also includes a light continental breakfast.

For the money, I don%26#39;t think ya can beat it. Too bad my trip is the week before, we could grab dinner.

Enjoy! And be sure to get downtown and wander around. I LOVE NEWPORT!

I%26#39;d say for something inexpensive and clean and safe, it%26#39;s either the Travelodge or Holiday Inn Express (also in the same area in Middletown, the next town over). And the bookstore near the Travelodge is a Barnes and Noble. Note: I%26#39;d stay away from the cheapies on Coddington Highway, if you were considering those (although I guess they%26#39;re in Newport).

    Champlin's Seafood Deck

My first trip to Champlin%26#39;s will not be my last. Clean with a beautiful view of the channel and Block Island. Food was great and plenty of it. We could have shared and still had some left over. We will be back.

    Champlin's Seafood Deck

I too enjoyed Champlins. I was vacationing alone and ate out back right over the water. The people that worked there struck up a conversation and were very friendly! Food was good too.

    Bicycles

We are planning our first visit to Providence. We are bringing our bicycles. Is there a good bicycle shop close to the Westin? Where are there good places to ride? Can you take your bikes on the ferry?

    Bicycles

For answers to your questions google';bike RI';. You can take bikes on the Newport and Block Island Ferries. Public buses have bike racks. If You don%26#39;t send for the ';Guide to Cycling in RI';, you can pick up a copy at the visitor center in the Convention Center next to the Westin.

    Bicycles

There is a three mile (up and back) bike path on the East side of Providence, on Blackstone Blvd. Very nice area.

Best B&B/hotel in Old Harbor Block Island?

What%26#39;s the best B%26amp;B or hotel to stay at in Old Harbor for an early 30s couple? I am reposting this to the general RI forum b/c there doesn%26#39;t seem to be anyone out there in the Block Island forum!

The Spring House, Manisses, and Atlantic Inn are all wonderful, but they are pricey.

Hilton or Marriott this weekend during Waterfire?

Hi, I have option of staying at Providence Marriott or Hilton. I read Hilton is 2 blocks from Federal Hill so we can walk to restaurants and stroll to Waterfire?

I read Marriott is not really downtown and that it is not safe to walk at night. Don%26#39;t know if my info is updated as I saw some old posts. Marriott has free parking, Hilton is 22.00.

I also saw trolley stops at Marriott but ends at 7pm on sat. I prefer to park the car and walk everywhere sat and sunday.

Thanks for your input in advance

Hilton or Marriott this weekend during Waterfire?

Your best bet would probably be the Hilton. From the Marriott you could walk to Waterfire and the Mall, but you could also do that from the Hilton and still be close to Federal Hill for the restaurants.

Is anywhere really safe to walk at night, some would say no. But myself, I would feel safter walking from the Hilton than the Marriott.

Hilton or Marriott this weekend during Waterfire?

Any chance you could stay at athe Courtyard Mariott? That is a better location than the regular Mariott....

Skip the hotels most of them are cheesy stay at one of Providence%26#39;s many inns or bed and breakfasts. Parking is FREE and so is BREAKFAST..... If you get a chance check out the beautiful Edgewood Manor (near Roger Williams Park and Zoo) or the Charles Newhall House right next to it. Also I think there are a few others around town but a much better romantic experience and probably for the same price!!!

June 23 - waterfire and parking

Plans changed and we are staying out of the city June 23 weekend. Will be driving into the city to see Waterfire Saturday evening. Any suggestions on where to park (safe area)? When to arrive? How much time should we anticipate wandering around? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

June 23 - waterfire and parking

The RI Historical Society has a 1 hour walking tour at 5:30 from the John Brown House on Power St. It offers a great intro to Waterfire and you can park in their lot on Charlesfield St. The walk costs $10.00/person and half the money goes to support Waterfire. The walk ends at Waterplace Park. You might like to walk to Federal Hill for something to eat after the walk. Federal Hill is about a 12 minute walk from Waterplace Park. Plan to spend a couple of hours at Waterfire walking the Riverwalk and visiting the other venues. There will be dance at Sovereign Plaza and a Jazz band on Steeple St. as well as entertainers along the Riverwalk. The Waterfire websight has good info on all of this as well as information on where to park.

June 23 - waterfire and parking

You can Park just about anywhere on the east side benefit street,or the mall( Providence Place) has reasonable parking.

  • inexpensive hotel for two nites with kids?

Ive never been there but is jamestown a bit more inexpensive than staying in narragansett Im looking to have my two nephews with me and another adult. I didnt want to spend more than 70-80 a nite. is that even possible? if so can you suggest any that are clean? its doesnt have to be fancy just clean!!!!!!!!!!! with a tv/ac?

inexpensive hotel for two nites with kids?

Jamestown doesn%26#39;t have much in the hotel/motel line. There%26#39;s the Bay Voyage Inn, but that won%26#39;t fit your price range. Have you looked at B%26amp;Bs? Check out bbonline.com.

You also might want to look into South Kingstown (north of Narragansett) -- there%26#39;s a Holiday Inn on Rt. 1, fairly close to the town line. Charlestown, another option, is south of Narragansett and may have some cheaper options.

inexpensive hotel for two nites with kids?

thanks so much for your useful info. Im not familiar with RI but I wanted to check something that wasnt such a far ride from ct. But I know its last minute and not too many vacancys. if you were to stay anywhere..........would you stay in south kingston? or north? I havent looked into b%26amp;b%26#39;s because most dont want kids..if you can shed some lite Id be grateful though! again............thanks so much for all your info!

What do you want to be near to? That info would help. Your first message sounded like you wanted to be near Narragansett, hence my response.

If you look at bbonline, they indicate kid-friendly options. You can call and ask, too, if you see something in a good location.

I did want naragansett, but I cant seem to find an affordable hotel. the B%26amp;b%26#39;s dont want kids........and other hotel reviews there have been bad!!!!!!! other than the pricey ones........so thats why Im having alot of trouble . Im willing to go outside of naraganset.......to save money and maybe have it be not as packed?

check out some of the new hotels on 95 near the airport in Warwick, a Marriot I think, and maybe a Holiday Inn. If it fits your budget it still less than half hour or so to Newport or Narragansett

THANKS so much! so you say those hotels are 95 would be in the town of ';warwick'; when Im checking? thank you so much. thats a big help becauase a hallf hour isnt bad......to be away from the beach. thanks any other things we should see or do in narragansett with my nephews?

I would think the TF Green airport website will direct you to some of the hotels...also the motel 6 in Npt is definitly adequate/clean but I don%26#39;t know about availability.

It%26#39;s going to be very difficult to get something near Narragansett, in the summer, that%26#39;s in good condition, accepts children, for that price. If you can find something in Warwick and don%26#39;t mind the drive, then go for it. Just be aware that going back to Warwick, up Route 1 (main road from Narragansett north), may involve some traffic backups at the end of the day (4 to 6 pm). Just plan for it. The big attraction in Narragansett is the beach, but there are some mini-golf attractions and the like. You can go to Galilee and see the fishing boats, and there%26#39;s the South County (historical) Museum, too. Also check out the local Chamber of Commerce website for other ideas.

Are you coming from CT or NY? Are you traveling on Rt 95 north? Westerly is a pretty good beach town and is close enough to Rt 1 to visit Narragansett and those area%26#39;s. Better than Warwick I would think.

nature-filled birthday on BI -- ideas please! :)

I%26#39;m taking my sweety to BI Friday for her birthday. We love nature and exploring and we%26#39;ll bring bikes. We camp and spend lots of time outside -- so a day on BI should be the perfect birthday surprise!

Which trails would be best to explore? Which parts of the island? I know we can purchase a map at the little chamber office right by the ferry dock, but I haven%26#39;t been to BI in a couple of years so I%26#39;m rusty. We%26#39;ll take the first ferry over and the last one back, bringing a picnic.

My sweety is very pale and burns easily - any walking/biking trails that are woodsier or shady?

We will bring food, as I said, but we%26#39;ll want a treat mid-afternoon. Any place for a good cheap snack? We%26#39;re foodies on a budget - something sweet maybe? Or a *good* dog or burger?

    thanks so much!

nature-filled birthday on BI -- ideas please! :)

not much cheap on block island :) only place we found was

a small place named Kathryn%26#39;s i think, right next to the moped man

Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket from Newport?

Is it possible to have a day trip to either Martha%26#39;s Vineyard or Nantucket from Newport? Want to go there for Memorial weekend and would also like to go to the islands if possible. Is it better to just stay on those islands instead? What is the ferry service?

    Thanks for your help!

Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket from Newport?

No Ferry service from Newport, but if you drive over to North Kingstown, you can catch a Fast Ferry to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard...

    http://www.vineyardfastferry.com/

Nantucket you%26#39;d have to drive to the Cape to catch a ferry.

A lot to do in a day, especially if you%26#39;re just in Newport for the weekend....plenty to do/see in Newport to fill your weekend.

Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket from Newport?

I agree that there%26#39;s plenty to see/do in NPT in a weekend..

if you really want to get to one of the islands, there is a ferry from NPT to Block Island.

I actually prefer Block Island to Newport and Martha%26#39;s Vineyard. It%26#39;s much smaller and more do-able in a day. ACK and MV would be overwhelming for a day trip I would think.

    Do that on another trip.

Too much to do in Newport that you would really enjoy:

mansion tours - Breakers is a must do and also Astors Beechwood for the living history tour. Marble House is my other choice if you try to fit in more.

Dining that will have you confused there is so much selection

    Shopping

International Tennis Hall of Fame is a great visit

Tour %26amp; tasting at a local vineyard

    MUST-DO is the Cliff Walk

Norman Bird Sanctuary for incredible hiking

10 mile Ocean Drive and stop at Castle Hill for the view and a cocktail.

historic walking tours, pirate walking tours, graveyard walking tours, harbor tours and the list goes on.... This doesn%26#39;t even include just relaxing at an outdoor patio and watching people and time go by.

Whe you do return to do the other islands make sure you include Black Island.

Thanks everyone for your help - had a great time in Newport and went back for a short trip to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard. I really want to explore the other areas you mentioned - next time!

    Thanks.

    Fireworks on Friday

The fireworks on Friday will be at the War College; will they be easily visible from Jamestown? We are dining at the Bay Voyage.

    Fireworks on Friday

I don%26#39;t think it will be a problem. The War College is diagonally across, on the east side of the bay. You%26#39;ll have the bridge in between you and the War College, but I don%26#39;t think that will interfere.

    new to this site!!

hello! everyone i am a member of trip adviser, and will like to take our kids to rhode island and willlike some input on it. like where is the best place to take my kids meaning the town that are good for them. i always look for amusment park and a good accomondation. i been to Maine and the best was Bar Harbor. we stay in old orchard beach and traveled toogunquit which i loved and many more. i will love to read some reviews of rhode island thanks you !

    kathnel

    new to this site!!

excuse me but also what i will like is atown where we can walk to the beach. something like ogunquit maine but with a amusment park and some great restaurants

    new to this site!!

Look into Westerly, RI. We have great beaches (Misquamicut Beach is the state beach here), lots of places to eat, and plenty of things for the kids to do.

Check out the Westerly/Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce website and the Misquamicut Business Association website for more information.

Mystic, CT is 20 minutes away with the seaport, the aquarium, Olde Mystik Village shopping area, and the downtown area.

Westerly is great ,mystic,ct the battleship cove in fall river mass, the roger williams park and zoo they have water rides and a nice carousel, the childrens museum, and russian sub, are all in providence. I know those areas are great for children. We have stayed at the Charles Newhall House with our kids and also at the Edgewood Manor without them and we have had family stay at both inns a great location and both are beautiful inns. They were walking distance to Roger Williams Park and Zoo.

where is edgwood manor? is it in westerly?

Edgewood Manor is in Providence technically Cranston but I think half of the street is in Providence they are walking distance to Roger Williams Park and Zoo.

Edgewood Manor is nowhere near where the area we have been talking about. Check out the Tripadvisor history of person who mentioned it.

check out the original question Rhode Island Edgewood Manor is a walk away from Roger Williams Park and Zoo and a walk away from Narragansett Bay so what is the problem I Love Rhode Island?

    yellow kittens

Can one walk to Yellow Kitten%26#39;s from the ferry?

    yellow kittens

    Yes.

    yellow kittens

yep, maybe 10 mins 15 tops.

I think we%26#39;re all assuming that you%26#39;re going to be landing at Old Harbor. Unless you%26#39;re taking the Montauk ferry, that%26#39;ll be where you disembark. From the dock, walk northwestward across the big parking lot. Then turn right on to Water St, left on Dodge, then right on Corn Neck Rd. Yellow Kittens is just past Pizza Plus, on your right.

    Cheers!

Check out the Blue Dory Inn its very nice and quaint. WE have been there.

    Tall Ships

Which would be the best place to view the Tall Ships parade at the end of June. Thanks

    Tall Ships

Probably by boat or even on Goat%26#39;s Island. Anywhere you can find a spot in Newport or on the water!! It will be chaotic!!!!

    Tall Ships

    this hould help

    www.tallshipsrhodeisland.org/schedule.html

that%26#39;s why i%26#39;m going to try to see them thursday instead of waiting for the weekend. The chaos.

We go downtown at 6 AM and walk around to see them. Free parking at that time and the crowds aren%26#39;t bad at all.

What%26#39;s going to be even more chaotic, President Bush is also going to be visiting Newport, if I am correct, June 28th!!! YIKES!!

Isn%26#39;t he going to the Navy Base?

omg, no wonder Wiz is crazy at work.

ewwww...bad timing on my part...damn it!

Yes, he will be at the Naval Base.

New Zealand%26#39;s Picton Castle will give visitors to the Newport Flower Show a glimpse of things to come when it arrives today, just days before the Tall Ships Rhode Island 2007 festival.

The three-masted barque will anchor in the waters off Rosecliff, site of the annual flower show, which runs through Sunday. The ship will make a trip to Block Island and return to Newport for the Tall Ships festival, which runs June 27-July 1.

Nineteen ships from around the globe will be moored and docked in Newport Harbor, along downtown wharves and at Fort Adams State Park.

The ships will be open for tours from Thursday, June 28, through Saturday, June 30, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. There will be a Parade of Sail on Sunday, July 1, that will begin at Castle Hill in Newport at about 12:30 p.m. and head north along the East Passage on Narragansett Bay around Gould Island, south of Prudence Island, where the ships will turn around and head south along the West Passage and out to sea by about 3 p.m.

Tall Ships organizers announced several changes this week, after the official program and a special section in today%26#39;s Daily News were printed.

Among them, the Gorch Foch II, a German barque, will moor in Newport Harbor instead of docking at the Louis Jagschitz State Pier. Renovations to the ship have increased its draft, necessitating the change, organizers said. Ferryboats will take visitors to the ship.

In addition, parking at satellite lots will cost $15. Previously, the price had been listed as $10. Visitors to Newport can park at the Pell Bridge interchange lot, which has 1,000 parking spots; Middletown High School on Valley Road, which has 1,500 parking spots; or the Gaudet Middle School on Turner Road in Middletown, which has 1,200 parking spots.

Shuttle buses from the satellite lots will be free, as will admission to the Tall Ships.

Free buses will shuttle visitors from the downtown area, near the Red Parrot restaurant, to Fort Adams, where several ships will be berthed and a number of activities will take place.

Harbor ferries will be leaving from Bowen%26#39;s Landing, the Newport Yachting Center and Perrotti Park to take visitors to Fort Adams. An all-day pass for the harbor ferries will cost $10.

There will be no parking in the Long Wharf area to accommodate vendors%26#39; tents June 27-July 1.

There will be several street closures Saturday to accommodate the Tall Ships Crew Parade that will begin at noon in Washington Square. Captains, crews and several marching bands will process down Thames Street, to America%26#39;s Cup Avenue, back to Thames Street and conclude at King Park on Wellington Avenue.

Parking will be restricted Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the metered spaces on the south side of Washington Square and on Thames Street from the Red Parrot to Lee Avenue.

Traffic is expected to be congested downtown June 28-July 1, so police are advising local businesses to schedule all deliveries before 9 a.m.

not to doubt, but how do you know he will be there?

    Two Days Solo

First off.. I have little experience in the solo vacation, but since there is no need to compromise, I am looking forward to charting a solo course in Newport for two days in July. So, no romance or party places please... but beyond going to the Breakers and taking in the Cliff Walk (just until the point where my potential fall into death would go completely unnoticed :-), what%26#39;s recommended? Are there any charters that aren%26#39;t all couples cozying up on deck? Stuff like that. We%26#39;re talking a sunday and Monday. How about best beach to be left relatively alone? And since I am staying in Middletown, what time does the parking get completely jammed and where do you park in Newport?

    Two Days Solo

Second Beach in Middletown is your best bet. Sunday and Monday is usually good for parking, unless it%26#39;s the 4th week.

    Two Days Solo

You can also go down to the Thames St/Wharf area and mill around in the shops. I take the bus because for me, driving is just a pain in the neck with RIPTA being so easy to navigate. AND it gives me the chance to see instead of watching where I';m going.

There is a lovely farm...Green Animals Topiary...a few miles the OTHER way--towards Portsmouth...that has a topiary garden (hence the name) an old lovely farmhouse and fabulous lawn upon which to sit and just watch the boats in the bay glide past.

Man, I wish we were gonna be crossing paths...we%26#39;d have a blast.

Definately do the Breakers and the entire 3.2 miles of the Cliff Walk if you up to it. There is nothing like it.

Go to Astors Beechwood mansion also for the living history tour and to Doris Duke%26#39;s Rough Point if you have enough time.

I agree that 2nd Beach is you best choice for a nice beach and to be left alone.

Go downtown to eat and don%26#39;t be afriad to eat at the bar. They all have friendly bartenders who will engage you in conversation. eat at the bar at the Clarke Cooke House, Black Pearl (inside or out and have the chowder) Mooring, 22 Bowens, Fluke.

Park at the Visitors Center and get your ticket stamped by RIPTA and you can park all day for something like $2.00. Just park behind the visitors center and bring your ticket inside and ask about the RIPTA stamp. Great deal!

Visit Aquidneck lobster company and walk around the tanks to see the lobsters. Grab a sandwich at Sig%26#39;s Deli and have a picnic at Brenton State Park and walk on the rocks. Go to Newport Vineyards and do a tour and tasting. Nothing like great conversation with strangers at a wine tasting. There is a great deli next to the vineyard - Fatuelli%26#39;s.

Go to Castle Hill and grab a glass of wine or soda, an Adirondack chair and watch the boats go by and also walk down to the lighthouse on the grounds. Enjoy!

    July 4th in Newport

Does Newport have any July 4th events?

My husband and I booked the Jailhouse Inn for both the July 3rd and July 4th. We plan on doing the Cliff Walk, seeing the mansions, and the 10 mile drive.

Do you recommend anything else? Wineries? Outdoor activities?

We aren%26#39;t the type to sit still for long and would really like to take advantage of this vacation so any advice is much appreciated!

Also, we are still up in the air as to where to go / what to do on July 2nd (and possibly July 1st) - any towns or areas we need to experience?

    July 4th in Newport

Newport absolutely hops on that wkend. There great fireworks and the Navy puts them on too I think. Take the ferry or drive to Jamestown, or Wickford, or Mystic. Walk around Sachuest Point Nat Wildlife Refuge. Other ideas would be to take a cruise of the bay on Sightsailer. You won%26#39;t be longing for things to do..be prepared for lots of people in Town.

    July 4th in Newport

For the 2 days you are there, your schedule is full.

I would suggest taking a short ride down to my hometown of Bristol for the 4th of July parade.It%26#39;s a great event and you%26#39;ll have a blast. There%26#39;s also a great fireworks display that happens later on in the evening..

Here%26#39;s the direct link for the parade.

    Hi

Newport has the Tall Ships arriving on June 27th thru July 1st. It will be CHAOTIC!! Jamestown is very nice and quiet. You can visit Beavertail!! This is the Newport Website of monthly activities, may be this might help you http://www.gonewport.com/

    Good luck!

www.GoNewport.com is the place to visit for a calendar of events.

Bristol is great for the 4th parade, but you have to arrive by 5am and you aren%26#39;t leaving until it is done. Great event, but an entire day.

Do the Cliff Walk, the Breakers Mansion, Astors Beechwood Mansion, 10 mile ocean drive and stop at Castle Hill Inn for a drink and sit in the adirondack chairs for the best view on the island.

Go eat downtown in the many great places. You must have clam chowder at the Black Pearl and some BBQ at The SmokeHouse.

Go on the harbor for a tour also. It is a great way to see Newport from the water. Many boats leave from Bowens %26amp; Bannisters Wharf area.

Newport Vienyards does a great tour and tasting and there is a fantastic deli right next door.

Talk to your waitress and bartenders for more suggestions. Most likely your bartenders since they are almost always living there and not working just for the summer as a majoirty of the waitresses do.

connecticut and rhode island fun things to do

    Foxwood%26#39;s Casino is a must.

connecticut and rhode island fun things to do

    Or Mohegan Sun...

*I* wouldn%26#39;t waste two minutes in a casino, myself. I say the mansions in New port...the beaches (maybe no big deal to a Floridian like you but we Texas Tarts like nice beaches)...there%26#39;s sooo much historical stuff to see and do.

    Have a great trip.

I%26#39;m not a casino person myself, and Norwich is an old mill town, but it does have, I hear, a rose garden that%26#39;s supposed to be good, and the area near the water has a few good restaurants.

Mystic, Ct has the Seaport (history), Olde Mystik Village (shopping and dining), its downtown area (again for shopping and dining),and the Aquarium. Allow about a 15-20 minute drive.

Westerly, RI has great beaches, a pretty downtown area with a gorgeous park, Watch Hill (to see how the other half lives-- you can shop and eat there too), and a lively arts feel (Chorus of Westerly, Granite Theater, and a number of galleries). About a 40 minute ride from Norwich.

Newport, RI has the mansions, the ocean, shopping and dining in the waterfront area, Tennis Hall of Fame, and more.

Check out the Chamber of Commerce websites for all. Also the Misquamicut Business Owners site (Westerly beach area), gonewport.com, newportmansions.org.

This should give you a start.

Its a must to visit Newport. When are you visiting? The tall ships are arriving June 27th thru July 1st. Take a ride along Ocean Drive in Newport and visit some of the mansions. There are many great restaurants and some nice beaches in Newport.

I would say visit Mohegan Sun if you do like gambling. Also, if you have time, take a ferry to Block Island!!!! That is a great day trip. I think you can take a ferry. Try this website for ferry times and locations. You can take it right out of CT. http://www.blockislandferry.com/

    Hope this helped.

You can go to a casino anywhere in the world and throw your money away.

Visit Mystic Seaport and plan on spending at least two days in Newport.

    Must sees...

    The Breakers Mansion

    Astors Beechwood Mansion

Walk the 3.2 mile Cliff walk or portions of it

10 Mile Ocaan Drive and stop at Castle Hill Inn for a drink and sit in the Adirondack chairs for the best view on the island

Clam Chowder at the Black Pearl

    Seafood chowder at the Mooring

    BBQ at the Smokehouse

Tour %26amp; Tasting at Newport Vineyards

    Shop...shop....shop...many interesting places

visit Aquidneck Lobster Company and check out the lobsters

Take a harbor tour which is a great way to see Newport from another angle

Tour the International Tennis Hall of Fame

If you have time visit Marble House, The Elms, Belcourt Castle, Rough Point, Rosecliff, etc......... many mansions to tour.

Visit St Marys where sonn-to-be president Kennedy was married

Tour the oldest synagogue in the country

    Lots to do www.GoNewport.com

    arcadia hiking

We%26#39;re heading to Rhode Island for the second time. Can anyone recommend the best trail(s) for a day of hiking in Arcadia Park? Or maybe the Ells Pond area--something easy or intermediate difficulty. We are going to be in the Waverly area July 4-5-6th, and would like a beach alternative. (We hiked in Ninigret and Moore Woods last time.)

    Thank you...

    arcadia hiking

Hmmm. Arcadia..Breakhart Trail- or the trail around Breakhart Pond for starters. The trails that go along the little rivers are really nice, especially the ones up to the Stepstone Falls, I forget their names. There are some trail maps at the visitor center but they are very primitive. I have found that the road into the park at the church (heading north) to be a good central location. From the first pond you can park and walk up to Breakhart pond and back. Mt. Tom Trail also. There usually are some mountain bikers and horse trail riders, but mainly the place is nicely underutilized and empty. Enjoy.

    arcadia hiking

Wonderful, thanks. I downloaded a map and it looks like Frosty Hollow Rd/FH Pond/John B Hudson Tr/Breakheart Pond--it%26#39;s difficult to tell distances, but maybe then--Breakheart trail over the top to Ben Utter Trail to Stepstone Falls. Or, shorter, drive to Escoheag Hill Rd and hook up to B Utter Trail to Stepstone Falls. There it is for the record! I%26#39;ll be checking this with the visitor center.

    I really appreciate it.

Kings Park at the end of town on Wellington Ave.is a nice place to put your child in the swing while viewing all the action in the harbor. Brick Alley Pub seems like a place that could handle a baby; or Yesterdays... in Middletown there is Anthony%26#39;s Seafood and the Coddington Brewery. Anyplace really, plenty of adults might behave badly too, as I recall from my days of waitressing in town.

    Newport to Boston by Train?

Any info on train to boston would be appreciated. Distance from Newport to train station, cost to get to station (taxi?), cost to get to Boston, time to Boston, how often they run, etc. Thanks!!

Also, it appears I can get from the airport (Providence) to Newport for $20/pp. How long will it take? Do I need reservations? Thanks again.........

    Newport to Boston by Train?

    HI

We have a train station right here West Kingston 1 Railroad Avenue

West Kingston, RI, 02892 -here is the websitehttp://www.trainweb.org/kin/. Do you mean take a taxi from the airport in Warwick (Prov)? If so, probably 35-40 minutes depending on traffic.

    Hope this helps a bit.

    Newport to Boston by Train?

my understanding is that you DO need to call to make the shuttle reservation from the airport. The trip takes less than an hour by private car...probably about the same in the shuttle.

I have no clue about the train.

    Dog Friendly place to stay

Hey we want to bring our (trained) dog with us to block island. We are traveling from the montauk ferry. ANyone know if dogs are allowed on the ferry. I know the blue dory takes dogs... but if anyone know of any other or rental home/apartments let me konw please! Thanks!

    Dog Friendly place to stay

There shouldn%26#39;t be a problem transporting a pooch on the ferry, but you could call the company to be certain. I know that on the boats from Point Judith and New London they only ask that the pet be well under control on a leash, if not in a ';container'; if they%26#39;re small enough.

Good luck with lodging - I%26#39;m a cat person so can%26#39;t help you with that one! My only suggestion would be to investigate the smaller B %26amp; B%26#39;s, whose owners are likely to be flexible if not outright canine-friendly.

    Dog Friendly place to stay

The Blue Dory Inn is the only place on BI that accepts dogs. Excellent place - they have several sister inns on the island. My Tibetan Terrier was an annual guest for years - sadly, this is our first summer without him, so we%26#39;re looking at other places to explore. But we%26#39;ve been very happy with Blue Dory and it%26#39;s sister Inns over the years. GREAT chocolate chip cookies for happy hour too - don%26#39;t miss them.

I know they have a lot of Jacuzzis in their rooms, and are in a great location to everything, right on Bellvue. (Short walk down the hill to downtown)

Definitely Inn at Castlehill. You will have a memorable honeymoon experience. Choose a Beach house. They have Jacuzzi tubs, kitchenette, King bed with lovely linens, a sitting area and a deck that steps right onto the sand. Beach House 37 and 34 are my favorite but they are all nice. If you can%26#39;t get a beach house try a beach cottage. They are also on a private beach and quite romantic. They are all different so if you get a beach cottage ask about what they offer. Castehill is away from the crowds and very romantic. The restaurant is very good as well and is the ';grill.'; I think it would a great choice for a honeymoon in New England. Have a great time.

Stay at The Hilltop Inn in Newport, RI

You should check out the... Historic Edgewood Manor.... which is about 25 minutes from Newport and 3 miles from downtown Providence. And 4 miles from the Providence airport. Great location. Walking distance to Roger Williams Park and Zoo. It is a majestic inn...... rich in history ,elegant, and luxurious with several rooms that have two person jacuzzi tubs. The breakfast is delicious and I think they are a three diamond rated property by AAA.

I agree 100% with fellow New Yorker 2firenze. Castlehill is THE spot and a beach house there is what you want. Congratulations!

Castle Hill Inn is very nice and the beach houses are the best, but it is best to remember that you are not in downtown and everytime you want to go downtown you will have to drive and pay for parking. If you want seclusion and time alone it is great, but if you want to enjoy downtown I would opt for something closer. The charm of Newport is the shopping, dining and tours available in downtown. Walk the Cliff Walk, the beaches, and go hiking at the Norman Bird Sanctuary for some alone time to talk and enjoy the scenery. Have a picnic at King Park or Brenton State Park also.

Francis Malbone House or Hilltop would be my first choice.

Reed Rose Cottgae. not as nice but has a pool. http://www.reedrosecottage.com/

Manhattan to Newport is 3 - 3 1/2 hours. Easy drive.

Try the Canfield House. It is a beautiful place with a lovely restaurant and, I believe, 4 Victorian style rooms which are also lovely and fully equipped. It is an easy walk to the center...food was great in the restaurant, and the people we dealt with on staff were lovely. The place has the most amazing woodwork...was once the only casino in Newport, I understand. Enjoy wherever you stay, and best wishes on your marriage!
