Vail Beach

My family and I have rented a home this summer on BI. The realtor stated that we were in walking distance from Vail Beach and that it was a great little beach for kids to explore. Shells, crabs, rocks etc. Has anyone been to Vail Beach which is on the South Western coast line? If so, can you tell me a little about it?

Thanks

Vail Beach

Here%26#39;s a link to an article that mentions Vail Beach, sounds like it%26#39;s a rocky coastal beach. If you click on the underlined link ( Beach) on the page where it mentions Vail beach, there is a photo.

Hope that helps.

Vail Beach

Vail is hands down one of the best beaches on Block Island. I lived there last summer and on my day off it was where you could always find me. There are tons of treasures but the path may be a little challenging for little ones, especially after a rain. Be sure to check it out before trying to bring them down.

ENJOY!!!!

Accomondation Recommendation - Old Harbor under $275/nt?

What%26#39;s the best/nicest accomodations we could get for under $275 a night for an Aug Sat %26amp; Sun stay in Old Harbor? Prefer something with private bath. We are a couple in our early 30s.

Thank you

Accomondation Recommendation - Old Harbor under $275/nt?

And, I should have said, although we could go as high as $275, the closer to $200, the better!

Thanks!

  • workout facilities/gyms in town?

We are staying at the Atwater villa B%26amp;B and was wondering if there are any public gyms to go to in the area?

    workout facilities/gyms in town?

Newport Athletic Center and the YMCA are the only ones I can think of. They are the next town over in Middletown.

There used to be one downtown, but that has closed.

The Hyatt and Mariott have fitness centers at their hotels.

    workout facilities/gyms in town?

I am not ambitious enough to drive out of town - thanks for the heads up - now I don%26#39;t have to pack workout gear YIPEE!

my honey belongs to the NAC...he loves it. They have yoga classes at 7am on mon, wed, and fri.

    Hello!!!

Next time you go to Newport, stay at Hilltop Inn. Very nice B%26amp;B. I think is the only B%26amp;B in Newport that offer a fitness facility!!!

Hope you have a nice weekend!!!!

where are the yoga classes? I am not sure what the NAC stands for. I hope the weather holds out this weekend - I can%26#39;t wait to go!!!

NAC stands for the Newport Athletic Club in Middletown. There is also a yoga studio in Newport called SOMA Yoga : http://www.somayoganewport.com/index.htm

I think you%26#39;ll get plenty of exercise walking around town/cliff walk etc....the weather is supposed to stay nice through the weekend (although a little cooler than the 70%26#39;s we%26#39;ll get the next couple of days....)

    have fun!

    Reservations for restaurants?

Going May 30 till June 2 for a wedding....For dinners, should I make reservations now...or can we just walk around and shop, and go into restaurants at our leisure without a wait?

    Reservations for restaurants?

You won%26#39;t need to make reservations right now for that time frame....Wed, and Thursday you should be fine. If you see something you really would like to try, Fri. and Sat. you might want to make a reservation while you%26#39;re there.

    Some restaurant choices:

American: White Horse, Rhumbline, Clarke Cooke House, 22 Bowens, Black Pearl, The Mooring, Tuckers, West Deck, Asterisk

    Italian: Sardellas, Puerinis

    Casual: Brick Alley, Red Parrot,

    Eclectic/Funky: Salvation Cafe, 5th Element

Inn at Castle Hill is excellent and the views are great (read in your previous post that you were thinking of there) You could always grab a cab to head out there. Everything else is within a 15 minute walk down into town.

    Check out:

    http://www.gonewport.com/nav.aspx?id=299

for some more choices, and links to many of the restaurants websites, to give you a better idea.

Also, keep your eye out for the dining guide, they have a lot of menues from lots of different restaurants.

    Reservations for restaurants?

For this time of the year in Newport is always good to make a reservation, just for be in the safe side, right? Specialy when you talk about places like Castle Hill.

    Good restaurants in the area:

22 Bowens ( A little price, but very good. Good steake.)

    Bouchards ( french food, excellent)

Castle Hill ( fine dinner, excellent )

    Mama Luisa%26#39;s ( best italina )

White Horse Tavern ( excellent food, one of the oldes tavern in the US )

    Mooring ( excellent sea food)

Tukers ( cheep, good and diferent )

Most of those places have a web site.

Hope this can help a little!!!!!

the white horse is not ONE of the oldest taverns, it is THE oldest tavern. The food is good, the service excellent and the atmosphere wonderful. I love it

  • Lodging While Visiting URI?

Our daughter will be attending University of Rhode Island in the fall and since we are from another state, we%26#39;ll be spending a considerable amount of overnights in the area over the next 4 years.

I would welcome some lodging suggestions. We don%26#39;t need to be in Kingston but would like to be nearby (i.e. Naraganset is fine, Newport is too far).

I%26#39;m not very comfortable with bed and breakfasts or motels, so we would prefer an inn or hotel.

Also, restaurant recommendations are welcome; we love seafood.

    Lodging While Visiting URI?

There is a Holiday Inn a few miles away that%26#39;s very popular with URI parents:

    ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hotel/sknri…

    Lodging While Visiting URI?

The Holiday Inn already mentioned is the only large-ish chain hotel in the immediate area and is very close to the campus. You can go to the URI website, Visitors page, and see other options. They%26#39;re mostly B%26amp;Bs. The Bay Voyage Inn in Jamestown may be one other option, and it%26#39;s in a beautiful location on the bay.

Vanderbilt Residence Club or Mill St. Inn?

Is anyone familiar with either or both of these hotels in Newport,RI? Would appreciate hearing some feedback - tia.

Vanderbilt Residence Club or Mill St. Inn?

Try the Hilltop Inn just stayed there beautiful Mill St Nice Vanderbuilt more a hotel size place

Vanderbilt Residence Club or Mill St. Inn?

Try the Hilltop Inn just stayed there beautiful Mill St Nice Vanderbuilt more a hotel size place

Vanderbilt Hall is a time share property, recently converted from an unsuccessful hotel. Nice amenities, good location for walking downtown, but marginal staff services at best--like many timeshare situations.

Mill St. Inn is an older place, been around for about twenty years and is tired; not a lot of personality.

Neither one is bad, but there are lots better choices in Newport than those two.

Call and see what the parking situation is...also try The Wellington...Nreport onshore and Fairfield at Long Wharf

    Best restaurants??

My husband and I are staying at the Marshall Slocum House on Kay St...In your opinion, what are some of the best restaurants...White Horse looked interesting to me...How far would that be?.I believe Thames is a 10 minute walk..We dont want anything too loud...We may want to do Castle Inn, but wer wanted to avoid getting in the car...

    Best restaurants??

I can%26#39;t believe that White Horse Tavern would be more than a 10 minute walk from Kay Street, and I would recommend the tavern for a quintensentially New England experience. Castle Hill is excellent, and worth the effort to drive to it, which wouldn%26#39;t be very long.

Try The Mooring or 22 Bowens for seaside dining, Puerini%26#39;s for Italian food, and for something fun, eat at the casino at the Tennis Hall of Fame for lunch. You can sit courtside and watch folks play while you eat.

There are so many restaurants, I%26#39;m sure others will recommend their favorites, too.

    Best restaurants??

For go to the White Horse Tavern from the Kay St. is very, very simple... Just take your right at Touro St. in the end of kay st. ( Touro / Bellevue ). Keep going straight all the way down at Touro St. ( in the end of Touro you will see a small gas station) Take your right in the second street after the stop light. Then you will cross Broadway. Keep going straight at the Farewell St. Drive one block and you will see in your left, right in the corner The White Horse Taver. ( the house is paiting in red, one of the oldest taverns in the US)

    Another good restaurants in Newport:

22 Bowens ( good steake, little price )

Mooring ( excellent sea food )

    White Horse ( excellent )

Bouchards ( french dining, excellent )

    Mama Luisa%26#39;s ( best italian food )

Hope this can help a little! Ups... and sorry my english. I%26#39;m not originaly from the US, but I live in Newport per 3 years now!

I vote White Horse...it%26#39;s worth the historical value alone. It%26#39;s cozy and quaint...the food is very good and the service excellent.

  • How to Identify A Bad Hotel?

I have researched hotels, apartments, BBs for my upcoming June 4-7th BI retreat with my wift, 10 month old son and perhaps dog. I am hesitant because many places have bad reviews scattered throughout the internet(not just Tripadvisor but everywhere). Where would you recommend for a higher end stay(maybe not a Four Seasons equivalent but the best on the island)

    Thanks!

How to Identify A Bad Hotel?

    HI,

I%26#39;d recommend the Rose Farm Inn. It%26#39;s a great place. If not, the top 5 B%26amp;B%26#39;s listed on this site are pretty solid. Keep in mind, reviews are very subjective. Everyone has different likes and dislikes, and when you%26#39;re paying for something, let%26#39;s just say your radar is on high for the smallest problem or miscue. When booking a B%26amp;B, I make sure that the breakfasts have been well reviewed, the place is in a decent locale, and that it%26#39;s very clean. Beyond that, the trip is what you make it. Good luck.

Hotpoint - sadly not here anymore...but

Hotpoint has closed its doors and in its old location is Persimmon. Persimmon is a wonderful restaurant and well worth a trip. Beautiful food with lovely presentation accompanied by a well put together wine list. The restaurant is small so book if you can.

Hotpoint - sadly not here anymore...but

As former Chef / Owner of Hotpoint I want to thank all of my former guests for making Hotpoint such a great success. Hotpoint had a great run and I wanted to go out in style so I sold it at its peak. I urge everyone to try Persimmon. Chef Champe Speidel has taken over this little gem from me and is now working his magic.

    Rhode Island

what cities will you be visiting? Newport is lovely and I%26#39;m not sure but I think I would spend more there on tours, etc than most other cities in RI.

    Rhode Island

Not nearly as much as you would spend in London. Coffee is still under 2.00 a cup. In Newport for lunch a nice sandwich platter would cost anywhere from 5.95 to 9.95 depending on where you go.

Xia is right. Newport is affordable if you %26#39;shop%26#39; wisely.

The Mansions are not to be missed...the Breakers especially.

    www.newportmansions.org

The White Horse Tavern has been open since 1673 and is nice. Lunch would run you about $35 US.

    www.whitehorsetavern.com

If it is the last week of June, the tall ships will be there (that%26#39;s why I%26#39;m going). They are free.

Of course, there is much more. I usually spend about $200-300US for a 6 day trip.

  • Lodging near Foxwoods

My husband and I have tickets for the David Copperfield show at Foxwoods. We are from MA and are looking for a nice, clean place to stay Saturday night (May 19) near Foxwoods. Any advice?

    Lodging near Foxwoods

If you want to stay in the Westerly/Misquamicut area, the Pleasant View Hotel or the Atlantic Beach Resort (condos) on Misquamicut beach are probably the best choices. There are a number of chain hotels in the Norwich, CT area, and that%26#39;s close to both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos. Norwich won%26#39;t be as picturesque as Misquamicut, if that%26#39;s a consideration. Also in Westerly near the beach are a number of B%26amp;Bs -- The Villa, Grandview, and Langworthy Farm, which has a small winery. All of these B%26amp;B%26#39;s are on Shore Road, which parallels the salt pond, Misquamicut, and the ocean.

Where do people go to dance in Newport these days

We are on our third annual pilgrammage to Newport this weekend. Where are people heading to go out dancing at night? Last year we danced under a tent right on the water...very fun....but I do not remember the name.

Also suggestions for what to do in Newport on a rainy weekend? We are not big drinkers...Thanks!

Where do people go to dance in Newport these days

Dancing under the tent....you probably hit Christies just before it closed for good.

For Dancing, try the Boom Boom room at the Cooke House on Friday and Saturday Nights. (Older Crowd 30 somethings on up...)

    Mamba Room/Rhino Bar (Younger/Mixed Crowd)

    Pelham (Younger/Mixed Crowd)

What type of Music are you looking for? Age group?

Where do people go to dance in Newport these days

No it was not Christies, which we remember fondly. It was on the same side of the street headed out of town towards the beach, one or two wharves up. Any who we are 40 something and like the music of the 70 or 80%26#39;s. Any thoughts?

Vincents maybe? West Deck has a tent, but I doubt they had dancing.....usually too crowded to even hear any music that they%26#39;re playing.

Not sure if Vincents has a band outside yet or not....

Boom-Boom room would be a good bet:

    www.clarkecooke.com/clarke_boom_boom.aspx

or, the Newport Blues Cafe (They have LIVE bands, but dancing is encouraged)

    http://www.newportblues.com/home2.asp

You could also check out the other places I mentioned (Mamba Room/Rhino, Pelham etc....but they might have a younger crowd) You could always stick your head in to see if you%26#39;d like it....

Newport Grand might have a band as well, but that%26#39;s not downtown.

Rustys in Middletown also has bands, out by 1st beach.

What about Billy Goode%26#39;s on Marlborough Street? I know they have live music, don%26#39;t know about dancing.

    Newport in One Day

I second the vote on the Breakers!! We did Newport in a day trip from Mystic, CT, and I would recommend touring no more than three mansions in a day. We also saw Marble House and The Elms. All of the homes we saw were great. Marble House is very ornate as the name suggests, but not nearly as large as the Breakers. The Elms does not overlook the ocean, but was one of the first large homes to have an elaborate heating system, so it could be lived in year round.

where to stay in newport with a 16 month old?

    Hi all,

We are headed to the Cape for a week, but want to stay for a weekend in Newport to break up the drive from NY. I would like to book an inn - but I know that many don%26#39;t take toddlers. . .can anyone suggest an inn or B%26amp;B that does?

Or a hotel that is walking distance from the main attactions. . . I am just not into a big hotel as much as a small more homey setting.

    Thanks!

Your best bet is to call the places you%26#39;re considering and just ask them. Some sites to consider for B%26amp;B info: legendaryinnsof newport.com, innsofnewport.com, gonewport.com, bbonline.com.

Big hotels are the Marriot, Viking, Hyatt.

where to stay in newport with a 16 month old?

One more thing -- bbonline has an option to look at listings that are kid-friendly.

Thanks for your help! We actually booked at the Burbank Rose. Brian was really friendly and even has a pack and play, but we%26#39;ll have our own since we%26#39;ll be on vacation the week afterwards.

Do you have any reccommendations for Newport - and can we bring a stroller to the mansions? Any restaurants - and are there good times to go with a kid?

Thanks for your help! I%26#39;ve never been there and am so excited!

    Juliet

I believe you can bring strollers to the mansions, but you might want to check first before you get there. Check out newportmansions.org.

Newport also has a visitor%26#39;s center near the harbor area that can provide all kinds of good info for you.

Restaurants with a toddler -- well, Brick Alley Pub is one of the first that came to mind. It%26#39;s got a lively atmosphere with plenty to look at, so you don%26#39;t have to worry about the little one disturbing anyone.

There places on the water that have outside dining, too; The Mooring is one of them -- great chowder and fritters.

You might also check the Newport Dinner Train -- they might have special runs for families.

    Have a great vacation.

Castle Hill Inn, for sure, if you want to pay the price. It also has cottages. That%26#39;s a short drive from the harbor area. For hotels, the Hilton and the Marriot are right on the harbor, and the restored Hotel Viking (not sure if there%26#39;s much of a view there). There are some great B%26amp;Bs, too, but not necessarily on the water, but close. Francis Malbone Hourse, Hydrangea House, Almondy Inn, Cliffside Inn are some I can name right off the bat.

    newport beachfront

Correction to my previous post --- it%26#39;s the Hyatt, not the Hilton.

Also check out the Chanler at Cliff Walk.

Castlehill Beach Houses or Beach cottages. Both on the beach and very private. A wonderful experience. Beach houses are a little more expensive than Beach houses but both are wonderful. The beach houses have a king bed and queen pull out sofa. Very nice. You can get 2 cotteges or houses next to eachother. Have fun!

Hubby %26amp; I (mid 40%26#39;s) are visiting (staying in town) for the long Memorial Day weekend - any recommendations on local place%26#39;s for reasonably good eats and good music?

    Thanks!

    Place to eat

Maria%26#39;s Seaside Cafe for what is probably the best food in Misquamicut. If you go into town (Westerly), I%26#39;d recommend Prime Time Cafe right over the bridge in Pawcatuck (love the vodka pasta with chicken), Up River Cafe (haven%26#39;t had anything I didn%26#39;t like there), or Billia%26#39;s Mediterranean Grille (particularly like the chicken romano (I think is the name)).

While you%26#39;re in the Westerly area, go to the Virtu Art Festival in the park downtown also -- great stuff to buy or simply look at. That takes place every Memorial Day weekend on Sat %26amp; Sun.

    Place to eat

Music -- that%26#39;s gonna be a challenge. You will be missing by a week a fantastic concert by the Chorus of Westerly, if classical was your thing. Don%26#39;t know if the Knickerbocker has started up their plans to offer blues; you might want to check on that. Two websites that might be helpful are the Westerly Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce site and the Misquamicut Business Association site.

Thanks, we plan on spending the day Sunday at Block Island.

It%26#39;s sort of a laid back relaxing weekend and the Art Festival sounds like our speed. We thought the evening would be nice for a few cocktails and some music but I guess everything is not in season yet. We%26#39;re staying at the Sandy Shore and wanted something within walking distance for the evening.

I was there many years ago and as I remember Maria%26#39;s is across from the Pleasant View in, isn%26#39;t it?

    Thanks for your help!

Yes, Maria%26#39;s is very close to the Pleasant View. And there may be live music at the Andrea Hotel; I just don%26#39;t think the food or the ambiance is very good there.

Need a Place Near Providence (East Side) - First Grandchild

The Old Court B%26amp;B on Benefit St. and Cady House B%26amp;B on Power St. are both in walking distance to Prospect Street. I would also consider Extended Stay America in East Providence. Although this accomodation is not in walking distance, it is close and offers many comforts for a longer stay.

You could also try the Marriot on Orms Street or the Biltmore downtown. Not a bad walk to Prospect, but some very steep hills.

Any recommendations on the how to spend the few hours we鈥檒l have there. We hope to rent bikes to get around.

    Thanks in advance

    One Day Visit

My wife %26amp; I were just there this past weekend. Memorial Day weekend is going to be busy and judging by the weather forcast you are going to have a glorious day. My suggestion would be to take the earliest ferry out of Point Judith which is 9:00am. Biking is a great way to see the island. As far as what to do during the day, there is walking on Crescent Beach from one end to the other, or a bike ride to Settlers Rock and a walk out to North Light. And there is always shopping (according to my wife).

As far as coming back, If you are in Westerly for Monday as well, take the 7:00pm out of Block Island and catch the start of the sunset over the North Light House. It is truly spectacular. Hope this helps.

    One Day Visit

Thanks - you have been a big help.

We%26#39;ll be sure to not miss the sunset. Thanks for that tip.

We are driving in very, very early on Sat. from NY to spend as much of the day in Westerly (Misquamicut Beach) - staying at the Sandy Shores and then plan on spending the day on Block Island on Sunday and returning home on Monday (mid day).

Did you find more information about Reed Rose Cottage? We are also traveling with our dog in July and interested in the two-bedroom suite of Reed Rose Cottage. Besides the information on their website, I have not found other comments about the inn.

    Reed Rose Cottage

Well, it is located in a mainly residential area of Newport, quiet and lots of beautiful homes, and not far from the action, beaches. So maybe thats why its less than other places.

We will be staying there the fall of 2007. If anyone stays, please post. The owner is apparently the president of the local B%26amp;B assn.

We just returned to Florida from Newport and stayed at the Reed Rose Cottage. Wonderful, wonderful and more. Hosts are so gracious, home is beautiful, peaceful and every need attended to. We could not reccommend this place more and do intend to return. Worth every moment you visit Newport to stay in the quiet community close to everything. An absolute must. We stayed in the 1 bedroom suite, but did get a chance to view the two bedroom for future use. both are really outstanding.

  • Need B&B Recs w/jacuzzi - mod $$

My husband and I are planning a visit in late April. We would really like a Bed %26amp; Breakfast with a jacuzzi tub or indoor hot tub, close to the main part of town to avoid driving.

    Thanks!

This web site has a lot of info on B%26amp;Bs:

    newportinns.com/newport_inns_bed_and_breakfa…

The Hydrangea House has a good location and does have jacuzzi tubs. Also check out the Francis Malbone Inn -- another good location (but don%26#39;t know about the tubs). Both places always get good reviews.

    Need B%26amp;B Recs w/jacuzzi - mod $$

also talk to the people at www.gonewport.com It%26#39;s a free reservation servicce, they%26#39;ll know about B%26amp;B%26#39;s that have jacuzzis, fireplaces etc....there are just so many B%26amp;B%26#39;s it%26#39;s tough to know who has what and for what price....their local knowledge is helpful.

Francis Malbone has jacuzzi tubs and in a great location. We were there in November and loved the inn. If you read the number of positive reviews here you%26#39;ll understand why. Enjoy your trip.

Sorry gave the wrong website for the reservation service....

    it%26#39;s:

    www.newportreservations.com

gonewport.com is a useful site about Newport (Dining, etc)

The Adele Turner Inn has a room with it%26#39;s own, private, outdoor hot tub. Castle Hill Inn has beautiful rooms and the Beach Houses and some Beach Cottages have jacuzzi tubs. If you visit during the week you can get a better rate but it is not in town. Some rooms in Malbone may have jacuzzis, it is in town and a very nice place to stay. Have a great time.

Hydrangea House Inn....gorgeous, centrally located, most rooms have jacuzzi and fireplace, flat screen (if you%26#39;re going to watch TV), and the breakfasts!!! OMG, salivating just thinking of them!!

Oh, and the shower is HUGE...you can fit about 4 people in there!

Hydrangea House is not moderately priced, though... I was looking to book in late April or early May and the rates were way too high. I realize that Newport is expensive, but there is no way I would pay more to stay in Newport than I just paid staying in the center of Rome, Italy, during high season

check out the Edgewood Manor in Providence only 25 min away and quite lovely I might add we think they are the best kept secret in Rhode Island we have been to all of the places mentioned and the Edgewood Manor tops them all on value and luxury.

You are not going to find much with a room jacuzzi, for the price you are

spending, especially at that time of year.

We are going the same time and I must have looked at EVERY place that has a room jacuzzi there was nothing that was really much under $200 a night.

You will probably have to forget the jacuzzi or stay outside of town.

    Tall ships parade of sail

    Good morning,

I would like to see the parade of sail on July 1st as they go out to sea, but not sure where the best viewing opportunity would be, as I am not from the area. We are staying at Matunuck beach. The information I could find says:

lead ship passes Castle Hill heading North.

first ship completes parade circuit (up Bay and around Gould Island, then South to sea).

Can anyone offer any advice as to where a group of ten could see this?

    Thanks!

Well, that%26#39;s going to be one crazy weekend. Can%26#39;t really help with places on that side of the Bay, but Fort Weatherill on Jamestown, and Beaver Tail probably have something planned.

Newport will be a zoo, but you%26#39;d be able to find some viewing areas around Goat Island, the Point, Fort Adams, Ocean Drive etc....they%26#39;ll have a Shuttle Bus system set up from Newport and Middletown High School.....but don%26#39;t expect a very ';relaxing lay down a blanket and have a picnic type of place';....at least on the Newport side.

From the West Bay your views will be a lot more distant.
